After Urbana’s Disappearance, Patciance Dean Finds New Home at Bethel U

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Less than a month after committing to swim at Division II Urbana University, Patciance Dean was back on the recruiting bock after Urbana announced that it would be permanently closing its physical campus.

Dean has found her new college, though, committing to NAIA program Bethel University in Mishawaka, Indiana. Bethel is located near Notre Dame in suburban South Bend, about 2 hours north of Dean’s hometown.

Dean is a current high school senior from Frankfurt, Indiana, where she attends Frankfurt High School. She is planning on beginning at Bethel in the fall, where she has received a scholarship.

Dean is currently a year-round swimmer for the Sugar Creek Swim Club in Crawfordsville, Indiana, and is primarily a sprint freestyle and backstroke swimmer.

Between her commitment to Urbana and her venture back onto the market, Dean was fortunate enough to get in one last meet at a divisional championship event in early March before competition ceased during the global coronavirus pandemic. There she swam new best times in the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, and 500 free.

Top SCY Times:

  • 50 freestyle – 25.66
  • 100 freestyle – 56.10
  • 200 freestyle – 2:05.00
  • 100 breaststroke – 1:16.06
  • 100 backstroke – 1:04.96

She joins a brand new Bethel program that has had 2 official seasons of competition. The women’s program currently lists 11 swimmers, all from the states of Indiana and Michigan, in just freshmen and sophomore classes.

Even with that small roster on a short season, the school placed 3rd of 4 teams at the Mid West Championships and tied for 14th as a team at the NAIA National Championships.

At those NAIA National Championships, Dean would’ve been the team’s fastest split on the 800 free relay. Her flat-start best time would have improved the relay by 7 seconds from a 21st place at nationals.
