The 2020 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Swimming Championships began Thursday, February 20 at the Brenda Villa Aquatic Center in Commerce, Calif. with the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay.
On the men’s side, Pomona-Pitzer leads the nine-team championship with 224 points, followed by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) in second with 218 and Redlands in third with 137 points. In fourth place is California Lutheran with 100 points, followed by Occidental (88), Caltech (75), Chapman (75), Whittier (70) and La Verne (56).
The women’s team rankings see Pomona-Pitzer in first with 209 points, followed by CMS in second with 208 points and Chapman in third with 162 points. Redlands is fourth with 140 points, followed by Occidental with 108, Whittier with 78, Cal Lutheran with 72, and La Verne and Caltech with 70 each.
The team scores take into account the diving results from last weekend’s diving championships.
The men’s 200-yard freestyle saw the CMS 200-yard medley relay team of Anderson Breazeale, Sam Willett, Marco Conati and Andreas Roeseler clock a new meet and SCIAC record of 1:28.91 to win the event. Cal Lutheran finished second in the race as the team of Miles Gaitan, Luke Rodarte, AJ Nybo, and Nick Kenny finished second with a time of 1:30.54. In third was Pomona-Pitzer as the quartet of Nick Borowsky, Lukas Menkhoff, Gregory Havton and Tag Curwen notched a mark of 1:31.43.
CMS also won the women’s 200-yard medley relay as the Athenas’ combination of Jamee Mitchum, Suzanne Starzyk, Stephanie Lewis and Natalia Orbach-Mandel powered to a time of 1:43.83 to win the event. The Sagehens finished second as Allison Liu, Haley Kirtland, Hannah Zurmuhl and Kate Denend turned in a time of 1:44.03, while Redlands was third behind the foursome of Sydney Nakagawa, Julia Hagenbaumer, Makenna Parenti, and Olivia Cano who clocked a time of 1:45.74.
In the men’s 800-yard freestyle relay Pomona-Pitzer broke the meet and SCIAC record in the race as Jason Lu, Anzo DeGiulio, Curwen and Will Abele glided to a top time of 6:38.30. CMS finished second as the Stags’ quartet of Ben Culberson, Willett, Nicholas Tan, and Breazeale posted a time of 6:45.56. Cal Lutheran placed third in the event as the foursome of Liam McCallum, Ben Brewer, Stephen Blaauw and Nybo registered a mark of 6:47.01.
The Sagehens won the women’s 800-yard freestyle relay as Katherine Lauerman, Kirtland, Jen Lenertz and Zurmuhl secured a top mark of 7:32.59 with a new meet and SCIAC record. The Athenas combination of Mitchum, Ella Blake, Augusta Lewis, and Christina Campbell touched the wall in second with a time of 7:33.68, while the Chapman four of Molly Davis, Riley Brownfield, Teresa Gerhold, and Hannah Parulan were third with a time of 7:44.64.
Action resumes Friday, February 21 with preliminaries of the 500-yard freestyle, the 200-yard individual medley, the 50-yard freestyle, and the 200-yard freestyle relay set for 9 a.m. at the Brenda Villa Aquatic Center.
