FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Northwest Conference men’s and women’s swimming teams concluded the second day of the 2020 NWC Swimming Championships at Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center (Federal Way, Wash.) on Friday. The Whitworth men and Whitman women lead in team standings heading into day three with 245.5 and 248 points, respectively.
The Thursday evening session kicked off with the men’s and women’s 200-yard medley relay. For the women, Whitworth (Galbraith, Siegler, Wornath, Hoff) outswam second-place Pacific Lutheran (Kishaba, Mundle, Hamilton, Kearney) with a 1:46.00 mark to take first. Puget Sound (Hendryx, Callahan, Skog, Haven) claimed third in 1:47.43. The Pirates (Rossmiller, Lempert, Ross, McClone) also came out on top for the men, finishing in 1:31.52 to take first. Pacific Lutheran (Trieu, Koivisto, Johannessen, Mortensen) claimed second, finishing almost two seconds behind first place with a 1:33.28 mark, while Whitman (Filion, Laird, Chang, Aslett) recorded a 1:34.65, good for third.
The night concluded with the men’s and women’s 800-yard freestyle relay, with Whitman (Selznick, Davidson, Felley, Joe) claiming first with a 7:48.01 mark, followed by Puget Sound’s second place 7:48.35 time. Whitworth earned third – almost six seconds behind the Loggers at 7:54.03. For the men, Linfield captured their first first-place relay finish of the Championship, finishing with a time of 6:48.84, followed by Whitworth’s 6:51.37. The Loggers claimed third in 6:53.18.
In the first finals event of the Friday evening session, Whitworth’s Cameron Lyon was the individual medalist in the women’s 500-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 5:07.28, followed by Pacific Lutheran’s Jenna Muller with a 5:07.63 time. Whitman’s Abbey Felley claimed third with a 5:11.11 mark. For the men, Puget Sound’s Dylan Reimers took first place by just under a second, recording a B-time of 4:32.73. Linfield’s Noah Cutting recorded a 4:33.36, good for second, while teammate Matt Lemire placed third with a 4:36.62 mark.
Puget Sound’s Kelli Callahan claimed first in the women’s 200-yard individual medley with a select time of 2:05.04. Claire Cranch of Pacific Lutheran claimed second with a 2:08.66 mark. Whitman’s Bella White swam a 2:08.78 to take third place. Linfield’s Neirton Oliveira led the men’s efforts, swimming a 1:51.01 B-time to take first, while Whitworth’s William Walters and Jake Davies swam a 1:53.71 and a 1:54.01 to place second and third, respectively.
Women’s 50 free frontrunner Aspen Monkhouse of George Fox was the individual medalist, touching the wall in 23.34 – a select time, while Calista Skog of Puget Sound took second in 23.97. Whitman’s Zoe Hill 24.05. Owen Lempert of Whitworth was the individual medalist on the men’s side with a 20.39 B-time, setting a new conference record. Lempert was followed by Linfield’s Garrett Sutton with a 20.55 mark, and Matthew Cole of Puget Sound with a 20.84 time. Also setting a record in the men’s 50 free was George Fox’s Adin Williams, who set an S6 classification Paralympic American record of 27.59.
Friday evening capped off with the men’s and women’s 400 medley relay, which saw Whitworth take first in both races. For the women, the Pirates (Galbraith, Siegler, Wornath, Hoff) swam a conference-best 3:51.62 time, followed by Puget Sound’s (Hendryx, Callahan, Skog, Kriz) 3:54.29. Pacific Lutheran (Kishaba, Nguyenle, Hamilton, Kearney) placed third in 3:55.11. The Pirate men (Walters, Lempert, Ross, McClone) finished in 3:24.15, while Pacific Lutheran (Trieu, Koivisto, Johannessen, Mortensen) place second in 3:26.74, and Whitman (Filion, Laird, Chang, Aslett) place third with a 3:27.25 mark.
