Iona Sweeps Sunday Dual With Manhattan

RIVERDALE, NY – Sparked by a sweep of all four relay events, the Iona College men’s and women’s swimming team closed out the regular season with a pair of convincing, dual-meet wins over MAAC-rival Manhattan College.

The Iona men, led by Gabriel FinchJackson MadoniaJalen Ramjohn and Conor Mullin, combined to take the opening 200-Medley relay. The entire unit rolled to a 163-95 win.

The Iona women with Luiza Da SilveiraVeronica SowinskiKatherine Lee and Aly Chain, teamed up for a 200-Medley Relay victory and paced the team to a 173-79 win.

The win raised the men’s regular season mark to 8 wins and 4 losses, as the women climbed to 9-5 on the season.

Individually, on the men’s side, double wins came from Matthew Anderson in the 200 and 500-Freestyle; Conor Mullin in the 50-free and 100-Butterfly. Single wins came from Gabriel Finch in the 200-Indvidual Medley; Daniel Hadary in the 100-Free; Jackson Madonia in the 200-Backstroke, Spencer Moran in the 100-Backstroke and David Son in the 200-Butterfly.

Kate Flynn led the way for the Iona women with wins in both the 50 and 100-Freestyle sprints. Single winners included: Amanda Agostino taking the 200-Breaststroke; Da Silveira in the 200-Backstroke; Willow Lopez-Silvers grabbing the 200-Freestyle; Isabelle Pabon claiming the 200-Inidviudal Medley; Meghan Pattison winning the 100-Back; Sydney Ruschmeier posting a career best en route to winning the 500-Freestyle; Veronica Sowinski in the 100-Breaststroke and Taylor Spillman taking the top spot in the 200-Butterfly.

The Gaels start their post season run on February 7 with a contingent travel to Boston University for the Winter Open Championship Invitational. That is followed by the 2020 MAAC Championships in Buffalo, which take place February 12-15 and then the team is onto the March 12-14 National Invitational Championships in Cleveland, Ohio.

Riverdale, NY – Senior Timothy Valentine (Massapequa, NY / Chaminade) led the Jaspers on Senior Day 2020, winning two events against Iona in the Jaspers’ lone home meet of the season at the Fieldston School on Sunday.

Valentine dominated the breaststroke, touching the wall first in both the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke, and helped the Jasper 200-yard Medley team to second place finish.

Prior to the meet, Valentine was honored alongside his class of 2020 teammates: Matthew Broadmeadow (Seekonk, MA / Seekonk) Carolyn Crocker (Broad Channel, NY / Archbishop Molloy), Tyler Dalton  (East Stroudsburg, PA / Pocono Mountain East), Will Kulp (New Fairfield, CT / New Fairfield), Samantha McNamara (Bethpage, NY / St. Francis Prep), Kali Nembach (Lynbrook, NY / Lynbrook), Carl Ranieri (Armonk, NY / Byram Hills), Liam Ridge (Pearl River, NY / Albertus Magnus). Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Marianne Reilly and Assistant Athletic Director William Aloia Jr. presented each Jasper with a senior plaque as their accomplishments over the past four seasons were announced.

Sophomore Branden Deiss (Benoni, South Africa / Crawford College Lonehill) also earned a victory for the men’s team, enduring the 1,000-yard freestyle with a first place time of 10.05.31.

Freshman Mackenzie Tuttle (Highland Mills, NY / Monroe-Woodbury) raced to a first place finish for the women’s team, winning the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:08.69, while fellow freshman Ciara Dalton (Pleasantville, NY / Byram Hills) won the 100-yard butterfly, just outpacing the second place finisher by .08 seconds.

Manhattan will conclude the regular season by visiting Fairfield on Saturday, February 1 before traveling to Buffalo, NY for the 2020 MAAC Championships February 12-15.
