While competing on day 2 of the Swim England Winter Championships, 24-year-old Jocelyn Ulyett produced a new British national record in the women’s short course meters 200 breaststroke.
During the heats at Ponds Forge this morning, the Loughborough athlete put up a morning swim of 2:19.09 to lead the field by more than 7 seconds.
She then put herself into an entirely new gear come tonight’s final where Ulyett busted out a lifetime best of 2:17.10 to take the gold. That mark overtook the previous British national record of 2:17.98 that Olympian Molly Renshaw logged at this same meet 3 years ago.
Splits for Ulyett’s swim tonight included 1:06.51/1:10.59 to give her the victory. This SCM 200m breast is now added to her LCM national record in the same event.
Heading into these Winter Nationals, Ulyett had never been under the 2:20 mark in this event. In fact, her fastest ever was represented by the 2:21.19 she logged at the 2017 BUCS.
Following her race, Ulyett said, “It was a good race for me. I didn’t have a tapered short course meet last year, so I knew that I would be able to improve my time from a few years ago and my training has been going really well, it’s been consistent.
“I feel strong, so coming into this meet I felt like I set myself up well. To be honest, coming into this meet I wasn’t really chasing any times, I was just focusing on the process of what I’ve been training for like my strength in the gym, consistency in the swimming pool and just putting that into practice.
My focus after this will be just getting back to Loughborough, sitting down with my coaches and seeing what needs to be improved and hopefully implement that into training.”
Behind Ulyett tonight was Lily Booker who logged a personal best of 2:21.57, while Megan Morrison did the same in 2:22.07 for bronze.
Very impressive swim that literally came from nowhere. Shame she isn’t at Europeans right now as that time will probably win the 200 breast.
Also, she trains at Loughborough but is her coach Marshall, Hemmings or someone else.
Ian Hulme last I knew, and don’t think she has changed.
