Martina Carraro Shaves .05 off Her Own Italian Record in 100 Breast in Bolzano

SWIMMEETING SUDTIROL – BOLZANO 2019

Swimming on day 2 of the Bolzano meet in Bolzano, Italy, Martina Carraro has shaved a few hundredths off her own Italian Record in the women’s 100 (short course) meter breaststroker.

Carraro on Sunday swam 1:04.68, which breaks her old record of 1:04.73 set at the 2018 Short Course World Championships, where she finished 4th overall. Carraro holds the Italian Records in the short course meters 50 and 100 breaststroke and the long course 100 breaststroke, set this summer in Gwangju at the World Championships.

Comparative Splits, Italian Record, 100 SCM Breaststroke

Martina Carraro 1st 50m Split 2nd 50m Split Total Time
Old Italian Record 30.46 34.27 1:04.73
New Italian Record 30.67 34.01 1:04.68

Her swim on Sunday is well ahead of where she’s been at this same meet in each of the last 2 years. While Bolzano is a qualifying meet for the upcoming European Short Course Championships, Carraro is already qualified for that meet, so there was no real pressure on her to be fast here.

Time Progression, Bolzano Meet, 100 SCM Breaststroke

  • 2017 – 1:06.85
  • 2018 – 1:06.85
  • 2019 – 1:04.68

Carraro is a member of the Aquacenturions team of the International Swimming League, where she swam a 1:05.37 in Indianapolis in this event in early October and a 1:06.16 in Naples a week later. That 1:05.37 was already the best time of her career aside from last year’s World Championships.

The improvement in time could be owed to an overall breakthrough 2019 for Carraro. In 2016, when she was 23, she swam 1:06.41 in long course. For more than 3 years, however, she was unable to return to that level, unable to get within even a second of that time. In 2019, however, at 26, in long course she swam 7 of the 8 fastest times of her career in long course (save only that single time from the 2016 Italian Championships).

That culminated with her Italian Record in long course in July of 1:06.36, which earned her bronze at the World Championships.

Also at this meet, Carraro swam 30.45 in the 50 breast (almost a full second slower than her Italian Record), and 1:02.96 in the 100 IM.
