Cate Campbell has overtaken Katinka Hosszu for the women’s World Cup point lead after the Jinan stop. Vladimir Morozov continues to lead for the men.
Campbell scored 60 points in Jinan to make up what was a 9-point Hosszu lead after the tour’s first stop in Tokyo. Campbell’s 60 points are the most scored in a single meet by any athlete so far this season. Hosszu scored 48 in Jinan, six fewer than she scored in Tokyo, and Campell now leads by 3.
Morozov has been rock-solid consistent on the men’s side. Scoring 48 points in both Tokyo and Jinan, he now leads by 9 points over American Andrew Wilson.
This week’s Singapore World Cup will cap off the opening cluster. The points leaders at that point will earn $50,000 each as a cluster bonus, and the top 8 swimmers in each cluster will earn sizable bonuses. You can see the full point and prize money format here.

Speaking as one who’s rooting for Cate, I hope she continues to compete frequently on the WC circuit and also in the lead to the Olympics. There’s really no better way of overcoming competition jitters than to compete regularly. One of the problems some of the Australian swimmers have had is that, isolated as they are on their own continent, they don’t race the world’s best very often, so when those occasions do arise, they loom larger.
Jitters? I’m not sure that not globetrotting is her problem
The downvotes on that are interesting. I’d think that authentic fans of the sport, Australian or otherwise, would be supportive of one of the all-time great talents of female sprinting examining and tweaking her training/racing regimen in the effort to optimize her performance potential.
Nothing is interesting in downvotes. I would prohibit them at all leaving upvotes only. So people can express their agreement with what was said and there is no reason to repeat it one more time saying same thing in other words. If you have an opposite opinion then say it. Try to convince other people but don’t hide cowardly behind faceless downvote. Would you care if someone with disturbed or childish mind downvote your brilliant observations 😀
wow im surprised Andrew Wilson has more points than mitch larkin.. I thought mitch larkin swims more events than Andrew Wilson?
I think FINA changed their World Cup rules recently so that only a swimmer’s Top 3 scoring events counts towards their points total.
The only things needed to overtake Hosszu at the meet of low level competition, that World Cup actually is, are the following:
– to win three events, because only three wins counts. That brings 36 points. It won’t be enough yet since Hosszu has always two IM events and she has no problem to find one more depending on how weak the field is based on the entry times. That can be anything from breaststroke to 800 because the contenders are mostly local swimmers.
– to show one decent race in terms of FINA points. That can give another 24 points, totaling in 60 points overall at particular world cup stop.

Go Cate!
I am confused. How do they get points? By place? I thought it was by FINA points? Guess I am wrong!
The point and prize money format is linked in the story. Essentially, it’s a combination of gold/silver/bronze medals (worth 12/9/6 points, respecively), top FINA point scores (24 for the top swim, 18 for 2nd and 12 for 3rd) and bonuses for world records (20 for a WR, 10 for a WR tie).
