Nice’s Charlotte Bonnet wrapped up a solid meet in Marseille over the weekend with a new French National Record in the 100 free, going 53.36 to win the final event of the FFN Golden Tour Camille Mullat – Marseille. Bonnet, known mostly for her 200 free which landed her a spot in the final at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio and again at the 2017 World Championships in Budapest, has been making a great deal of progress on her short game over the last year. And now she has erased Malia Metella’s 53.49 from the French record books. Metella, the older sister of Marseille’s Mehdy Metella, clocked her 53.49 at the 2009 French Elite Nationals in Montpellier, the qualifying meet for XIII FINA World Championships in Rome.
Bonnet has been steadily improving her 50 and 100 free times this season. On Saturday in Marseille she broke 25 seconds for the first time in the 50 free, going 24.89 to finish second to countrywoman Marie Wattel, who also swam her first sub-25 (24.85). At the Geneva International Challenge Meet in January, Bonnet cracked a 53.72 in the 100 to break the meet record and come within .07 of her lifetime best. That time of 53.65 came from 2017 French Elite Nationals last May, the selection meet for Budapest. She swam the 100 free at World Championships and improved her PB to 53.77. There she made an effort to go out quickly, knowing she could finish.
In addition to improving her going-out speed, Bonnet continues to close well, as seen in her comparative splits:

Congrats to Charlotte who transforms slowly but surely into a true sprinter. Pellerin’s freestyle training magic again. A sub 53 is possible for national championships next month.
