After a breakout gold medal yesterday in the women’s 200 breast from Tatjana Schoenmaker, the South African women continued their strong showing in the pool on the Gold Coast on day 4, as Erin Gallagher lowered the continental record in the 100 freestyle.

Swimming in the semi-finals, Gallagher clocked a time of 54.38, lowering the existing record held by Karin Prinsloo (54.48) by one tenth of a second. Prinsloo swam that time twice in 2014. Gallagher improves her previous best of 54.93 by over half a second.

The 19-year-old heads into the final seeded 7th, just behind Canadians Kayla Sanchez (54.18) and Penny Oleksiak (54.34). Australian Cate Campbell and Taylor Ruck are setting up for an epic duel for the gold tomorrow night, registering the top two times in 52.64 and 53.05 respectively.

Gallagher has already placed 5th in the women’s 50 free in 25.03, and will compete in the women’s 50 fly final later in the session.
