Virginia To Host Duke In Home Opener

The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will host their home opener against Duke on Friday (Nov. 3) at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Charlottesville, Va. Diving events will begin at 11 a.m., followed by swimming events at 3 p.m.

Admission to Virginia swimming and diving meets is free to the public. Public parking is available, on a first-come, first serve basis, at Slaughter Recreation Center and the parking lot closest to the West Gate at Scott Stadium.

The Virginia men’s team is ranked 25th and the women’s team ranks 14th, while the Duke women hold a national ranking of 23rd, according to the latest poll by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.

Both Cavalier teams (3-0) enter undefeated in dual competition with wins over Penn State, Pitt and LSU. In the team’s last meet (Oct. 20-21) against Pitt and LSU, Virginia tallied 20 first-place finishes. The women’s team defeated Pitt, 218-130, and LSU, 251-97, while the men defeated the Panthers, 196.5-155.5, and the Tigers, 222-131. Senior Jennifer Marrkand (Westford, Mass.) led the team with three first-place individual finishes and two first-place relay finishes, earning her ACC Women’s Swimmer of the Week.

The Duke women enter with a 2-2 record, while the men’s team holds a 0-4 start. In their last competition (Oct. 20), the Blue Devils were swept by defending ACC champions NC State. The women’s team suffered a score of 195-103, while the men’s team lost 179-113. Duke senior Isabella Paez led the team with a first-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly.

The Cavaliers swept last year’s meeting between the two teams, defeating the Duke women, 175-125, and the Duke men, 164-135. Virginia won 19 events and set five Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion records in Durham, N.C.
