Olympic diver Kassidy Cook will not head to Budapest this summer for the World Championships. USA diving announced yesterday that this is due to shoulder injury. She was set to dive in the synchronized 3-meter with Maria Coburn.
Cook has faced adversity with her diving career in her past. The Rio Olympian first injured her shoulder in July of 2012 after failing to make the London Olympic team by a heartbreaking .42 points. Cook’s shoulder was dislocated before she hit the water on her dive and the impact of the water tore her labrum. Cook immediately had surgery and took to a rehab routine for five months. She watched the London 2012 opening ceremonies from her hospital bed. In 2013 she fell off a golf cart and had to heal a broken collarbone and in the spring of 2014 she spent time dealing with a torn meniscus. Cook reset and finished third at 2015 NCAAs and in 2016 qualified for the Olympic games where she finished 13th.
Currently USA Diving’s high performance director and the World Championship coaching staff are looking at Coburn and trying to select another springboard diver on the team that can compete as her synchronized diving partner next month. Coburn will be able to compete at World Championships either way as she is also qualified in the individual 1-meter springboard dive.
