Medalists from the first 3 days of the 2016 British Summer Championships continued their winning ways today at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield scoring loads of personal bests in the process.
Right off the bat, Bath’s Charlie Attwood completed his sweep of men’s 19+ breaststroke events, knocking down the 200m distance win in a time of 2:12.11. It took a monster of a personal best for Attwood to hold off a charging Luke Davies from Birmingham. 2:12.11 is what Attwood recorded on the event, crushing his previous career fastest of 2:13.51 from the Olympic Trials this past April.
For Davies, the 2015 European Games bronze medalist in this event, he scored a well-earned silver just .19 of a second behind Attwood, stopping the clock at 2:12.30. That betters his personal best as well, as he previously held a top time of 2:12.75 from Baku prelims.
Kaylee Dekker of Mt. Kelly continued the swift time streak, wrangling in the win in the women’s 13/14 100m freestyle. Tonight she touched in 57.99, her first-ever dive into sub-58-second territory…or sub-59-second territory for that matter. Her personal best entering this meet was the 59.13 she produced just two months ago, so this teenager is one to watch with such a significant time drop under her belt.
For the women in the 15 year age group of the same sprint free event, the field saw Freya Anderson double up on her 50m freestyle victory from last night with an eye-popping 54.73 in this final. Anderson previously set the British Age Group Record in this 100m free event in 54.72 while competing at the European Junior Championships. That mark earned her the gold medal at those championships and she was just .01 shy of that performance tonight.
Ellesmere’s Charlie Hutchinson doubled up on his 400m IM victory from last night, earning the win in the men’s 13/14 100m butterfly tonight in a time of 57.35. Teammate Tazmin Pugh also brought home gold, scoring the win in the women’s 16 year 200m backstroke (2:12.89).
Other women’s 200m backstroke winners include Rosie Rudin who touched in 2:11.66 for gold in the 17/18 age group, while Kathleen Dawson nabbed the women’s 19+ win in a mark of 2:09.62.
For Dawson, she shaved off about a half of a second from the Scottish National Record in this event during prelims, then completely obliterated that mark by almost 2 seconds. Details of her new Scottish National Record will be in cluded in a separate post.
