Rio Torch Relay Day 69: Five Cities On East Coast of Santa Catarina

On each day of the official Olympic torch relay, carrying the Olympic flame to the Olympic cauldron in Rio de Janeiro, the Rio2016 Facbeook page is posting brilliant and spectacular images from one of the world’s unique and most beautiful landscapes. Each day until August 5th, we will bring you these stunning images.

On the 69th day of the Olympic torch relay the torch travelled along the east coast of Santa Catarina, making its way through five different cities.

It began in the city of Tubarão, home to just over 100,000 people.  Named after the Tubarão River, its main attraction is the river itself and the surrounding nature. The torch continued through the city of Laguna, before travelling further north to Palhoça, Sao Jose and Florianópolis.

The most interesting thing to occur in Laguna is a collaboration between the dolphins and the fishermen. Since at least 1847, a pod of bottlenose dolphins drive fish towards fishermen who stand at the beach in the shallow water. When one dolphin rolls over, the fishermen take that as a sign to throw out their nets. The dolphins then feed on the escaping fish while the fishermen catch the rest. The dolphins were never trained for this behaviour.

Palhoça and Sao Jose are both suburbs of Florianópolis, which is the state capital. Florianópolis is one of the most visited places in Brazil with 42 beaches, lagoons and waterfalls. The city is known for having high safety standards, quality of life and eco friendly policies relative to the rest of the country. Its population is about 470,000.
