George Bovell, Ally Donahue Claim T&T Athletes Of The Year Awards

Trinidad and Tobago’s Amateur Swimming Association has announced its male and female Athletes of the Year for 2015.

Topping the list for the men is veteran swimmer George Bovell, a sprint freestyle specialist who is still making international finals at the age of 32. In 2015, Bovell earned bronze in the men’s 50m freestyle at the Pan American Games in Toronto, touching in 22.17.

Earlier in the season, Bovell had clocked a new T&T National Record in the men’s 50m breaststroke, clocking a time of 27.69 to break the 28-second-barrier for the first time, earning silver in the event at the 2015 Belgian Open.  Later, at the 2015 French Open, Bovell posted a time of 22.26 in the 50 freestyle, clocking an automatic-qualifying time for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. As such, Bovell joined an exclusive club of swimmers that have competed in 5 different Olympic Games.

Of note, up-and-coming USC Trojan and T&T swimmer, Dylan Carter, was recognized as the FINA high-point winner, a sign of the 19-year-old’s transition into the next big sprinter to carry the torch.

On the women’s end, Alexandra Donahue earned Athlete of the Year honors. “Ally” competes for Brown University, having transferred last summer from the University of Florida.
