Matt Hurst Joins Penn State University Coaching Staff

  2 Retta Race | June 17th, 2015

Big Ten school, Penn State University, has announced the addition of Matt Hurst to the coaching staff in the role of assistant coach.  Hurst has spent the last eight years as an assistant coach at Southern Connecticut State University, prior to which he competed at SCSU as a student-athlete, ending his career as an 11-time All-American.

While on staff at SCSU, Hurst helped guide a total of 84 All Americans and three individual NCAA DII Champions, while also mentoring the women’s squad to its highest finish ever at the NCAAs.  In another career highlight, Hurst served as an assistant coach with the Dominican Republic at the 2009 FINA World Championships.

On his appointment to the Penn State staff, Hurst commented, “First, I want to thank, [Athletic Director] Sandy Barbour, the coaching staff, and the team for giving me this opportunity and welcoming me and my family to Penn State.  “As a Pennsylvania native, it’s a great honor to return home and represent Penn State. Tim has a great vision for what this program can accomplish; and I’m excited to be a part of that.” Hurst is returning to his roots, having grown up in the Haverford area and competing for Upper Main Line YMCA, where he was a 26-time All-American.

Penn State finished 24th at the 2015 Men’s NCAA Championships with 27 total team points and the women placed 20th at the 2015 Women’s NCAA Championships with a team total of 56 points.

From one native PA Boy to another, Congratulations Matt! This is a great hire for PSU, Matt has been a first class assistant at SCSU and I have no doubt his talents will be a great asset in moving the Nitny Lions up the Team placing lists at both the “BIG 10” and NCAA’s.
