Minnesota Assistant Steve Miller Resigns to “Pursue Career Outside of Swimming”

Minnesota men’s and women’s assistant swimming coach Steve Miller has resigned his post to pursue a career outside of swimming, the university announced on Monday.

“The University of Minnesota athletic department has undoubtedly shaped me into the person I am today over the past eight years and for that I am forever grateful,” Miller said in a statement. “I have a tremendous amount of respect for the profession of coaching, however, I feel it’s time for me to have a career that allows for a more balanced family life. I want to personally thank Kelly Kremer, the Gopher staff and all of the student-athletes I have had the privilege to work with.”

Miller has been an assistant at Minnesota for three years, which followed two years as a volunteer assistant with the program. He’s been involved with the varsity squad since the 2008-2009 season, where she was a four-time NCAA First Team All-American as a part of Minnesota’s relays.

“Steve is such a great person, and we have been fortunate to benefit from his years of service to our students and our University,” head coach Kelly Kremer stated. “He will be missed not only at Minnesota, but the coaching profession will miss him as well. While I know our profession cannot afford to lose quality people like Steve, I am happy for him and Jill that they are pursuing their life plan.”

Miller primarily worked with the sprint and middle-distance groups, and is married to former Canadian Olympian, NCAA Champion, and Golden Gophers star Jillian Tyler.

Miller worked primarily with the sprint and middle-distance groups at Minnesota. He graduated from Minnesota in 2009 with a degree in geography, and has since earned a Master’s of Education in sport management.

Steve Miller is a top-notch coach, swimmer, person. Just like the other coaches at the University of Minnesota, he is one of the kindest people and will be greatly missed… best wishes to him and Jillian!

Ben Rayner from Ohio University also announced he is leaving after only one year at OU. But that probably has more to do with a difficult head coach……
