California’s Ryan Murphy is now two for two with 200 Backstroke NCAA titles. In the process, he also broke the NCAA record to win the event for a second year row.
On Thursday, Murphy lead of the 400 medley relay with a 44.17, breaking Ryan Lochte’s NCAA record. After breaking Lochte’s 100 back record, Murphy won the 200 backstroke with a final time of 1:36.77, breaking Lochte’s 200 backstroke American and US Open record from 2007 of 1:36.81.

I am sure Murphy will do well this summer, but I doubt he will dominate the world in Kazan, unless your definition of the word “dominate” is different than mine.
Ryan Murphy is finally at that point where I think he is ready to be the world’s best backstroker.
His time is really coming soon for some special swims.

I’ve voted for Nolan’s 200 IM but I hesitated for a long time with both Murphy’s backstroke performances.

Congrats to Ryan and Cal! Sounded like he’s been on a mission for one of these for awhile now and such a great record to attain. Those Lochte SCY records are so difficult to get to but it’s great to see it go. Sitting good for Worlds this summer, possibly a podium appearance? 🙂
