The Board of Swimming Queensland presented Australian sprinter Cate Campbell with the Susie O’Neill Award during the McDonald’s Qld State Championships.
The annual Susie O’Neill Award recognises a Queensland swimmer whose exceptional achievement and example over the past year were inspirational to the swimming community.
In anchoring the Australian team to the gold medal in the 4 x 100m Medley Relay at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Cate swam the fastest ever 100m Freestyle Relay split.
Cate also featured in Australia’s brilliant win at the Games in the 4 x 100m Freestyle relay, in which the Australian team broke the world record set during the super suit era, which had seemed untouchable.
Coached by Simon Cusack, Cate further underlined her status as the world’s best women’s sprint freestyler by winning the Commonwealth Games gold medal in the 100m Freestyle, and then winning gold medals at the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships at the Gold Coast in the 50m and 100m Freestyle, and the 4 x 100m Medley and Freestyle relays.
