Colorado State Champion Ella Moynihan Verbally Commits to Notre Dame

Defending 5A Colorado State Champion in the 200 free Ella Moynihan has verbally committed to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, she announced on Tuesday morning.

Moynihan is primarily a middle-distance freestyler, with her bests events being the 200 and 500 freestyles:

  • 100 free – 51.21
  • 200 free – 1:48.33
  • 500 free – 4:50.30
  • 1650 free – 16:45.04

She also split as fast as 23.0 and 50.5 in the 50 and 100 yard freestyles at the State Championship meet as a junior, representing Arapahoe High School.

Moynihan was a very good backstroker, butterflier, and freestyler at the beginning of her high school career, but as she’s progressed and matured, the freestyle races have emerged as her best.

The Fighting Irish will need Moynihan’s immediately on their 800 free relay to compete in the ACC. Every 200 freestyler from last season who was better than 1:53.0 will have graduated by the time Moynihan arrives, and that relay last year was just 6th at ACC’s last year in 7:11.92.

They’ve started rebuilding that group with this fall’s freshman class that includes Molly Treble (1:49.2) and Moynihan’s former club teammate Mary Hinton (1:53.1), but the new addition will still be a key leg to that relay.

Moynihan trains her club swimming for the Aces Swim Club.
