Duncan Scott gave the crowd exactly what they came to see in the 200 IM tonight, winning Scotland’s first gold of the Games as he defended his 200 IM title in a new Games record of  1:56.38.

Swimming out of lane 2, Scott went out with Scottish teammate Evan Jones on the fly, touching just behind him in 24.99, but had the fastest backstroke leg in the field by half a second at 28.90. That saw him hit halfway in 53.89, seven tenths of a second ahead of Jones’ 54.61 and over a second ahead of Lewis Clareburt in third.

Scott split sub-34 on the breaststroke leg with a 33.95, but the middle lanes of William Petric and Tom Dean did close the gap to around a second and a half. The Scottish swimmer touched in 1:27.84 with 50 to go, 1.28 seconds ahead of Clareburt in second with Jones falling to 5th with a 35.03 split. Dean split 33.07 for the fastest breaststroke leg in the field.

Scott hung on down the final 50, splitting 28.54 as he touched four tenths ahead of New Zealand’s Lewis Clareburt, who notched a New Zealand record of 1:56.77. Tom Dean won bronze in 1:57.22, only 0.21 seconds slower than he was four years ago and his fastest swim since the Tokyo Olympics.

Scott sliced half a second off the 1:56.88 Games Record he posted at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, which came at the end of a summer in which he pulled out of the World Championships through post-COVID training struggles. He was faster on all of the first three legs this year, hitting the final wall in 1:27.84 compared to 1:28.90, but came home around half a second slower than his 27.98 final 50 four years ago.

He was slightly slower than his season best of 1:56.08 from the Aquatics GB Championships in April, but was three tenths faster than the 1:56.69 he clocked four weeks ago at the Scottish National Open Championships. He remains ranked 4th in the world this season.

Scott was the 2022 Commonwealth champion in the 200 IM, touching out Tom Dean by 0.13 seconds in 1:56.88. He won silver in 2018, making this his third medal in three editions for the Stirling-based swimmer. With Mitch Larkin winning the 2018 title in a Games record, and Daniel Tranter doing so in 2014 and James Goddard doing so in 2010, that mark has been lowered by the winner at the last five Games.
