- Live Recap:
The top seed in the men’s 100 free Jack Alexy is a scratch from his final entry of the meet, making him a wash from the meet, while the newest World Record breaker Kate Douglass has held on to all three of her races for Saturday morning, for now.
As she prepares for some big choices (or some big triples, or even quadruples) at Pan Pacs, she is scheduled to swim the 50 fly, 100 breast, and 100 free on Saturday. Given what she did in the 50 free, the 50 fly and 100 free feel like the two races for her to hold on to for a possible record swim, though she was very good in the 200 IM as well.
Beyond Alexy, there were a handful of top 10 scratches – though in most cases those were swimmers who had already missed their other races and seemed unlikely to show up for the last day of the meet.
The notable one is Van Mathias, the new American Record holder in the 50 breaststroke, who has dropped the 50 fly (#5 seed) to focus on the 100 breast (#3 seed). Mathias’ newest version is best known as a breaststroker, but he spent most of his Indiana collegiate career as a sprint butterflier.
Still, his career path forward is in the breaststrokes, so that’s a logical choice.
