The 2026 Austrian Swimming Championships are slated to begin on Thursday, June 4th, with the affair lasting four days at the Vienna City Hall pool.

The competition represents one of the final opportunities for Austrian athletes to qualify for this year’s European Championships, with the qualification deadline standing at June 14th.

With a few exceptions, including Heiko Gigler and Martin Espernberger, nearly all of the nation’s top-tier athletes are expected to race this week.

For Austrian Swimming Federation (OSV) President Arno Pajek, these championships are not only of great sporting importance, but the meet draws attention to the framework conditions that make Austrian top-level sport possible in the first place.

“Year after year, we see in Austria how much potential our swimmers possess. However, to fully utilize this potential in the long term, we need the appropriate infrastructure.

“Modern training facilities, sufficient pool space, and high-performance centers are crucial prerequisites for being able to compete internationally.”

Pajek stressed that this competition “impressively demonstrates how attractive our sport is. At the same time, it also show how important investments in the future of swimming are.” (OSV)
