Steenbergen on 52.33 in April: “I wanted to swim a fast 100 free, that’s my main focus this year”

2026 Bergen Swim Festival

2x World Champion in the 100 Free Marrit Steenbergen showed her skills in Bergen, busting out a world-leading time of 52.33 to take the win. Steenbergen said she is really focusing on having a fast 100 free this season. While still unsure of her exact lineup at the Dutch Trials and European Championships later this summer, the sprint star knows she will swim the 100 free, while also possibly competing in the 200 free, 200 IM, or 50 back.

Sounds as if she is relying on her coach for a lot of the planning since, she was not quite sure when her trials are.

Pretty sure she has a fairly good idea of what is happening when…Just not what she will swim.

if LA 2028 was tomorrow, would she be the clear favourite for the 100 free?

Didn’t Haughey go 0.1 slower?
Plus Huske went way faster in SCY, so you’d think she’s right around their times too.
O’Callahan is pretty quick too.

I don’t think any one swimmer would be considered a clear cut favorite.

He’s saying Huske just went a big PB in another format and that as the Olympic silver medalist in this event, even a small drop in LC makes her really hard to beat.

That isn’t the same as projecting Kevin Cordes to dominate LC after his first NCAAs where he broke through. Sorry if that train of thought was too quick for you to follow, we can ask our resident architect/importer/exporter to go slower for you next time.

I remember Swimswam peanut gallery predicted 2:03-2:05 for him

It was hilarious.

Agreed – I would say Steenbergen, Haughey, MOC and Huske would be co-favourites if LA2028 were tomorrow.

No. There is no favourite. At this stage I would say the 100 free is probably the least predictable on the women’s side with about 10 swimmers who could conceivably win

Swimmer – PB – Age

Siobhan Haughey – 52.02 – 28 yo

MOC – 52.08 – 22 yo

Steenbergen – 52.26 – 26 yo

Huske – 52.29 – 23 yo

Then you have Jack, Harris, Douglas.

In terms of potential, my money is on MOC to someday break 100 free WR
