The final day of the 2026 Rotterdam Qualification Meet took place in the Netherlands with several notable results transpiring on both the men’s and women’s sides.
Although not a selection meet for the European Championships, it was a qualifying competition for the younger set striving to make the grade for this year’s European Junior Championships slated for July 7th through July 12th in Munich, Germany.
Among the senior set, Olympian Thomas Verhoeven got it done for gold in the men’s 100m fly, registering a time of 53.84 as the sole sub-54-second performer in the field.
Michael Raje was next to the wall in 54.08, with Tiago Fonseca Gomes rounding out the podium.
Kim Busch was the decisive victor on the women’s side, registering a gold medal-worthy outing of 1:00.77.
That was enough to hold a healthy advantage over Elise Tanis, who settled for silver in 1:01.28, followed by Stella Lentge, who bagged the bronze in 1:02.04.
After setting a new Dutch Junior Record in the 100m backstroke (55.05) earlier in the competition, youngster Giovanni Phillipson doubled up with a podium-topping performance in the 50m sprint of the discipline.
Phillipson produced a swift time of 24.67 to reap gold, relegating Nikodim Markovic to the silver medal position in 25.92.
Luca Boorsma also landed on the podium in 26.23, good enough for bronze.
Adding another gold to her haul was Maaike de Waard, taking the women’s 50m back race.
She stopped the clock at 27.94 to beat her peers by well over a second, with Germany’s Lina Kroeger notching 29.16 and Dutch junior swimmer Jinth Engelse reaching the wall in 29.21.
Additional winners included Jarno Baeschnitt nabbing men’s 200m free gold in 1:47.30 and Sarah Dumont of Belgium reaping the same result in the women’s race, hitting 1:58.68.
With the conclusion of the competition, the Royal Dutch Swimming Federation released its roster for the European Junior Championships.
