Heading into the final day of the 2014 U.S. National Championships in Irvine, California SwimMAC has retained their lead in both the women’s scoring, the men’s scoring, and the overall combined team scoring, despite some good days from their closest competition in each gender.
In the men’s battle, the Cal women, led by a 1-2-3 finish from Missy Franklin, Rachel Bootsma, and Liz Pelton in the 100 back, picked up 62 points. The Cal women, though, didn’t swim any relays at this meet (they’ve done a few this week), whereas the SwimMAC squad took 3rd with a 1:07.4 breaststroke split from Micah Lawrence. Added on to her individual win in the 100 breast, resulted in 94.5 points for the SwimMAC women.
The focus at this meet for NBAC has been largely on their men’s scoring, but with Cierra Runge’s 2nd-place finish in the 400 free, the NBAC solidified their 3rd-place position with 69 points.
Also moving up into the women’s top 10 were the Longhorn Aquatics women, mostly associated with the University of Texas program, but with a few juniors and post-grads chipping in. They won the 400 medley relay on Saturday night, and moved from 12th on day 3 to 6th on day 4.
The SwimMAC men, meanwhile, were almost precisely matched by the NBAC on day 4 scoring, but ultimately out-paced their rivals 66-63 on the day to stretch their lead a little further. It was a pretty quiet day for Cal, which allowed Club Wolverine to jump into 3rd place with a big 68 points. They had a chance to do even more damage on Sunday, but with Connor Jaeger and a few other Club Wolverine swimmers scratching the men’s 800 free, there will be a lot of points left on the table.
