For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Alyssa Ton, a junior at Fountain Valley High School in Fountain Valley, California, has announced her verbal commitment to the University of Tennessee for 2027-28. She wrote on social media:
“I’m beyond excited and incredibly grateful to announce my verbal commitment to the University of Tennessee to continue my academic and athletic journey! I want to thank my family and friends for their endless support throughout this process. A huge thank you to Coach Nathan for always believing in me and guiding me every step of the way. And a special thanks to Coach Rob, Coach Matt, and the rest of the Tennessee coaching staff for granting me this incredible opportunity. I can’t wait for what’s ahead in Rocky Top🏔️ GO VOLS!!!🍊🍊🍊”
Ton swims for Irvine Novaquatics and Fountain Valley High School. She is our #4 pick from the Way Too Early list of top girls’ swimming recruits from the high school class of 2027, thanks to her incredible versatility and a 200 free time that would have scored at NCAAs last season.
She kicked off the 2024-25 short-course season with PBs in the 100 free (49.84), 500 free (4:45.33), and 200 back (1:59.47) at the Kevin Perry Invitational in November. At Winter Juniors West, she lowered her 100/200 free (49.56/1:45.37) and 50/100 back (25.26/54.48) times while leading off NOVA’s relays. A week later, she competed at CA/NV Winter Sectionals and came away with new PBs in the 100 back (54.18), 200 back (1:57.89), 100 fly (54.23), and 400 IM (4:12.35). She also split a 53.87 butterfly leg on the NOVA medley relay.
Ton earned 4 more PBs during high school season in April and May, going 25.08/53.68 in the 50/100 back at the Sunset League Championships, and 1:44.12/4:43.39 in the 200/500 free as she won both events at the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 Championships.
Ton jumped into long-course season with PBs in the 100 free (56.67), 200 free (2:00.94), 50 back (30.03), and 50 fly (28.75) at MVN’s Fran Crippen SMOC. Throughout the summer, she notched lifetime bests in the 200 IM (2:16.94) at Grand Challenge; 400 IM (4:59.50) at U.S. Nationals; 200 free (2:00.66) and 100 fly (1:02.75) at LA Invite; 50 free (26.28), 50 back (29.54), and 100 back (1:03.42) at Summer Juniors; and 100 free (56.26) at Summer Championships in Irvine.
Ton’s 1:44.12 in the 200 free is the #2 time in the cohort. It would have made the ‘B’ final at the 2025 NCAA Division I Championships. Her 50/100/500 times are moving in the right direction, and she has the potential to be a major force for the Lady Vols’ relays. That’s not to overlook her IMs, back, and fly performances, which she could conceivably develop into main events in Knoxville. In any event, it is clear that Tennessee is building a formidable class of 2031, with verbal commitments from #4 Alyssa Ton, #10 Adalynn Biegler, #15 Kaidy Stout, and #17 Sloane Whelehan so far.
Best SCY times:
- 500 free – 4:43.39
- 200 free – 1:44.12
- 100 free – 49.05
- 50 free – 22.91
- 200 IM – 1:58.65
- 400 IM – 4:12.35
- 100 fly – 53.81
- 200 fly – 1:59.18
- 200 back – 1:57.89
- 100 back – 53.68

No recruits for Virginia??
Starting Sept 1, the official account has followed only a handful of the 2027 class — and they all visited on the same weekend — Erisman, Derivaux, Buckley, Biegler, Stout.
They’ve been selective — or prospective recruits have.
It’s the latter my friend. Buckley Biegler and Stout committed elsewhere almost immediately after their visit. I heard they only went as a formality for the free trip and to get out of class. 🤭
Nixon and Ton both took their time but also got the ick after their ghastly weekend in Hooville. 🥀
Audrey D unfollowed by UVA Insta. they will not be getting a top 10 national recruit in 27
I’m so confused. Do they have anyone for class of 2027 on the women’s side?
Looks like they have none.
SwimSwam commenters really gonna be the ones to get Gary Taylor fired 😂
You would think the safe sport violations would have been enough.
Based on what I heard from auburn swimmers never should have been hired
Was worried about Tenn recruiting after Huger left. They’ve only gone to sign three of the best recruiting classes in program history since. And now landing them domestically as well.
So excited about Alyssa and seeing how she develops over these next 6 years. Lots of options to branch from that crazy 2FR. Distance free kind of the only hole on the roster right now, so maybe 100/200/500 would be optimal. Crazy pairing her with Jansen. Crush and Hirai can carry the FL/BK work. Lots of back depth, not so much fly. But breaststroke corps are insane. IM in good hands with Jansen, Brown, and Sweeney.
Will need another 50/100 ace after Spink. Biegler looks like a great… Read more »
Kredich is a great coach and I couldn’t think of someone personally more deserving of his success.
He’s been through a lot, personally and professionally, and it seems to all be coming together
(I’m not a Vols fan)
So happy for Matt – A fine man and great coach. GO VOLS!
Tenn is not letting Texas have all the fun
what is the reason for these sudden changes? UVA has little money to spend?
No dynasty lasts forever. At some point, swimmers just wanna be different and build their own thing. Athletes love Matt Kredich. He has about as sterling of a reputation as exists in this sport. It’s unsurprising that Tennessee would rise up to be the contenders to knock the Cavs from their throne.
Well said, but I think it is all a bit premature.
Wait for Erisman and Derivaux. Maybe UVA wants someone big and after that get some big international talents like they did with Curtis this year.
Big pickup!! Ella Busquets committed tonight as well.
Cmon Rylee!! Take us to the promise land. Would slot in perfect to Spink’s role. Ready made title medley relay for 3 years.
Did Rylee visit Tennessee?
She did
And fell in love with the whole team culture & dynamics promoted by Kredich so much that Erisman’s changed her mind on her original choice of school (you can guess which one that is, hint it’s Andrew’s fave program).
With Deriveaux, the package which UT dangled in front of her was essentially an offer she or rather her parents simply couldn’t refuse. As they say, money talks.
I feel like if Erisman was really headed to Tennessee, she would at least be following them on social media.
Between the 5 programs she’s visited, she’s only following Cal and Texas.
she’s cut back. she definitely followed Tennessee and Virginia at one point
Well we all know how unreliable social media can be for predicting verbals from recruits… But in this case I think you’re on the right track here.
Like you, my best guess is that the top 2 have narrowed it down to either Cal or Texas. Maybe even a collective decision to attend the same school, who knows!
For the sake of balance and parity, my personal preference would be the former. Texas already has a stacked 2027 class committed to them. Cal currently has no one in the Top 20 or Honorable Mention. Just a lone verbal from Alba Arnall (Best of the Rest).
Forgot to congratulate Alyssa Ton and Matt Kredich in my previous post, my bad!
This article may have been understandably hijacked by all the speculative interest in where our pair of arguably generational talents are heading, but let’s not forget who this article was originally about!
We need a swimswam forum!
Don’t believe she was ever following the official Tenn SD account but she follows the whole team and staff…could mean something or could mean nothing. She also follows NCSU and didn’t visit there.
And now she is following them 😳
Yeah that’s new. Kredich + rest of staff about to pull off the heist of the century two seasons in a row!
As of this message, she is still following Tennessee. For that matter, for all the Gary Taylor “fans” she follows him too.
She did: https://www.instagram.com/p/DPzeV42ka0Z/?hl=en&img_index=1
She posted pictures from Texas, Cal, and Tennessee as far as I can tell.
Some of those Tennessee pictures are mixed in with UVA pictures… so only trip she didn’t post is Michigan
