23-Time CIS Champ Erica Morningstar Taking a Break, At Least, From the Pool

After her final CIS championships with an impressive resume Canadian Olympian Erica Morningstar is taking a break from the pool. Last weekend Morningstar raced for the last time with the University of Calgary Dino’s.

“I knew coming in that this was going to be my last meet, but I didn’t want to think about it that way because there was lots of racing to do,” said the focused swimmer to the Calgary Morning Herald on Saturday.

Morningstar came home from the meet with three golds, one silver, and one bronze; as impressive is that is it was nowhere near the top form she’s been over the years. Over her four years Morningstar has won 23 CIS championship gold medals including multiple records, truly the most dominant Canadian university swimmer over the past decade.

Morningstar has been a member of the Canadian national team since 2006 and has competed in not only the world championships but also the Olympic games. She’s the Canadian record holder in the LC 100 free and 200 IM along with the 4×100 freestyle relay.

After a disappointing Olympics in London Morningstar knew that she needed time away from the pool. Not exactly sure when or even if she will return Morningstar stated “I’m not formally announcing my retirement, but I’m definitely taking a break from swimming for the moment.”

As for now Canadians have to wait anxiously to know whether or not Erica Morningstar will be returning to the pool to represent the red and white again.
