Welcome to the first prelims session of the 2025 Summer Junior Nationals Championships. On the docket today, we have the girl’s and boy’s 200 butterfly, 50 backstroke, and 100 breaststroke events.

We will also have a distance session after the meet that includes the girl’s 800 freestyle and the boy’s 1500 freestyle.

Caroline Mallard is the top seed in the girl’s 200 butterfly, and Olympic sibling Andrew Shackell is leading the men’s field.

Teagan O’Dell will also be swimming this week, after she competed at the World University Games earlier this month, and she will racing her first event, the 50 backstroke, today where she is the top seed. Gavin Keogh will lead the boy’s event.

Raya Mellott and Ian Call are the top seeds in the 100 breaststrokes, and Clarke Neace and Jonny Hines are the top swimmers in the prelims session of the girl’s 800 free and the boy’s 1500.

Girls 200 Butterfly– Prelims

The girl’s 200 fly was all about the class of 2026 swimmers with the top four swimmers all entering their senior year. Clare Watson, a Stanford commit, took the top seed out of this morning’s prelims session, touching in 2:12.12 to win heat eight by four-tenths over fellow Stanford commit Alyce Lehman, who was 2nd in the heat and qualified 3rd overall. Watson, from Bellevue Club, also dropped about four tenths from her seed time of 2:12.57.

Caroline Mallard, from SwimMac Carolina and a Purdue commit, took 2nd, adding exactly a second to her seed time to finish in 2:12.35, comfortably securing her spot for tonight’s final.

LaMirada Armada Swim Club and Indiana commit Kayla Han won the first circle seeded heat in 2:12.78, a tenth drop from her seed of 2:12.88, and the top four swimmers in tonight’s final are separated by just over half-a-second.

Boys 200 Butterfly– Prelims

Enzo Solitario had a massive drop in the boy’s 200 butterfly, touching in 1:57.54 to drop almost four seconds from his previous best of 2:01.30 that he set in July of 2024. This is the 2nd fastest 15-18 time this year, only behind Thomas Heilmans 1:54.03 from June, and it is the 17th fastest 17-18 200 fly of all-time. Soliario will be attending the University of Wisconsin in the fall

David Sammons finished 2nd in 1:59.00, about a tenth add from his lifetime best of 1:58.86.

Ewan Dalrymple qualified 3rd in 1:59.06, his first time under the 2:00 barrier, improving on the 2:00.18 he went earlier this month.

Top seed Andrew Shackell was 4th in 1:59.13, and 15-year-old Charlie Cancelmo was 5th in 1:59.29.

Girls 50 Backstroke– Prelims

Brynn Lavigueur, a 2026 Texas commit, earned the top seed in this morning’s 50 backstroke with her time of 28.75 touching just one hundredth ahead of top seed Teagan O’Dell. O’Dell has already moved to Cal, and is now attached to the Pleasanton Seahawks.

A pair of 15-year-olds finished 3rd and 4th. Maggie Dickinson qualified 3rd, six-hundredths back of O’Dell in 28.82 and Gabi Brito rounded out the athletes under 29 seconds this morning in 28.97 for the 4th seed.

There is also a pair of twins in the final with Eva Rootink and Roos Rottink from Memphis Thunder swimming 29.08 and 29.17 for 5th and 7th respectively. Eva is comitted to Indiana for the class of 2026 and Roos is committed to Virginia.

Summer Thresher, 2026 BYU commit, came in between the sisters in 29.12, and Alana Berlin, from Schroeder YMCA and a rising Stanford freshman, was the last finalist in 29.21.

Boys 50 Backstroke– Prelims

Blake Amlicke, from Nashville Aquatics club and one of the rising Virginia freshman, won the prelims of the boy’s 50 backstroke in 25.60, touching almost two tenths ahead of Aaron Gordon‘s 25.77 out of Waterloo Swimming in Texas. Gordon will be joining the Arizona Wildcats in the fall.

Gavin Keogh, an NC State commit from Flatiron Athletic Club, was 3rd in 25.83, just off the 25.59 he swam at Futures last weekend for 3rd.

Miles Blackson-Dunbar of Alpha Aquatics, and a ’26 Tennessee recruit, was 4th in 25.92 as the final athlete under 26 seconds.

Girls 100 Breaststroke– Prelims

There were three athletes under 1:10 this morning and they are all in different high school classes.

Elle Scott, who will be a freshman at Cal in the fall, took the top seed in 1:09.15, just off her lifetime best of 1:08.59 from last August’s Junior Pan Pacs.

Mikayla Tan, a 15-year old from San Ramon Valley Aquatics who will be a sophomore in high school next year, took 2nd in 1:09.36, a two-hundredth drop from the 1:09.38 she went at a sectionals meet a few weeks ago. Her preseason best time in the event was 1:11.45 from 2023.

Maddie Moreth, a soon-to-be high school senior from Valparasio Swim Club, was 3rd at 1:09.86. This was about a tenth off the 1:09.75 mark she set in May of 2024. She is committed to swim at Florida in the fall of 2026.

Top seed Raya Mellott dropped to 19th, touching in 1:11.64 and will swim in the ‘C’ final tonight.

Boys 100 Breaststroke– Prelims

Ian Call, a 16-year-old out of Memphis Thunder, was the only top seed of the morning session to hold onto his spot and earn lane four in tonight’s final. He won the boy’s 100 breaststroke, stopping the clock in 1:00.61 to drop four tenths, and be the top seed by almost a full second tonight.

Call, the 13-14 NAG record holder in the boy’s 100 breaststroke is now the 2nd fastest 15-16 year-old in history, coming in ahead of Michael Andrew‘s 1:00.68 from 2015. Only Josh Matheny has been faster, sitting at 1:00.17 from 2019.

Gunnar Hansen from Lubbock Swim Club, an Alabama commit for the fall, took 2nd in 1:01.59. This was a significant drop from his previous best of 1:03.17 from July of 2024.

There was a tie for 3rd between Nitro Swimming’s Oliver Munn, who is Swedish and appears to be swimming his first meet in the United States, and Shareef Elaydi from Santa Clara Swim Club in 1:01.90.
