2025 U.S. Junior National Championships

The 2025 Summer Junior Nationals have been unfolding all week long from Irvine. While most of the swimming world has had their eyes locked on the World Championships in Singapore, many junior swimmers have been throwing down impressive performances.

During the fourth night of finals, Flatiron Athletic Club’s Gavin Keogh posted a huge best time to win the boys’ 100 backstroke. The 17-year-old high school graduate led the race from start to finish, opening in 26.08 before blasting home in 27.78 to touch with a final time of 53.86. He won by 1.78 seconds.

Keogh’s swim obliterated his previous best of 54.72 by 0.86 seconds and also broke Will Modglin‘s 2022 meet record of 54.41 by 0.55 seconds.

Keogh was already the fastest American 17–18 male with his previous best time, and he’s now widened the gap over SwimAtlanta’s 17-year-old Collin Holgerson, who ranks second at 55.19.

With his newly minted personal best, Keogh jumps from 17th to 4th on the all-time U.S. rankings for 17–18 boys, bumping Modglin out of the top 10.

Top 10 All-Time 17-18 Age Group Rankings:

  1. Daniel Diehl (YMCA of Cumberland), 53.07 — 2022
  2. Ryan Murphy (Bolles School Sharks), 53.38 — 2013
  3. Michael Taylor (Dynamo Swim Club), 53.77 — 2016
  4. Gavin Keogh (Flatiron Athletics Club), 53.86 — 2025*
  5. Gunner Grant (Heart of Texas Aquatics Team), 53.89 — 2019
  6. Jack Aikins (SwimAtlanta), 54.03 — 2020
  7. Jack Conger (Unattached), 54.04 — 2013
  8. Wyatt Davis (Carmel Swim Club), 54.14 — 2019
  9. Nick Simons (Lake Oswego Swim Club), 54.15 — 2022
  10. Keaton Jones (Swim Neptune), 54.34 — 2023

Earlier in the meet, Keogh won both the 50 back (25.19) and 200 back (1:57.88) in personal bests, with his 100 back victory completing a sweep of the backstroke events. His 200 back victory was a meet record, breaking the previous mark of 1:58.42 set by Josh Zuchowski at the 2022 edition of the meet. The swim moves Keogh up to No. 16 all-time in the 17–18 age group after previously ranking 21st. His prior best was a 1:58.19 from last summer’s Junior Pan Pacs, when he was still competing in the 15–16 age group. That time still ranks sixth all-time in that age bracket.

Keogh is set to join NC State this fall and is the No. 7 recruit in the boys high school class of 2025. He leads the class in both short course yards backstroke events.
