In heat 2, the first of the circle seeds, Florida Southern junior Matthew Holmes got out to an early lead on the front half and never let up. There was a lot of jockeying for position behind Holmes. Drury junior Young Tae Seo and Cal Baptist sophomore Brandon Schuster moved from fourth/fifth to second/third on the breaststroke leg, passing a crowded field. Seo was up by 8/10 over Schuster at the 300, but a very strong freestyle leg from the latter gave him second place in the heat. Holmes went 3:49.12 for the heat win; Schuster was 3:51.37 for second, while Seo went 3:52.61 to take third. Schuster and Seo both made it into the A final.

Simon Fraser sophomore Rolando Hernandez swam a stunning 3:48.93 to win heat 3, taking 4.7 seconds off his seed time to post the morning’s fastest 400 IM overall. He held a commanding lead over the first half of the race, but a pair of 31s on the breaststroke leg from Wayne State sophomore Joao Ribeiro put him in second heading into the final 100 yards. From there, Hernandez outsplit Ribeiro by 1.7 seconds and won the heat. Ribeiro dropped 1.5 to finish second with 3:49.90, coming to the wall ahead of Lindenwood junior Cristian Vasquez (3:51.34). Queens senior and meet record-holder Nick Arakelian swam a casual 3:49.97 in the last heat to set up a potentially thrilling final tonight.
