The Michigan Open is currently underway at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich., and SwimSwam’s 15th-ranked recruit in the high school class of 2026, Indiana commit Elizabeth Eichbrecht, wasted no time making headlines.

Representing Supernova Swim Team, the 17-year-old clocked a time of 16:06.54 to win the 1650 freestyle by nearly 42 seconds, chopping 41.33 seconds off her personal best.

She entered the competition with a best time of 16:47.87, set at this same meet in February 2024. This was only her second time swimming the event since then, having clocked 17:17.66 at the Michigan Short Course Championships a month later in March.

Her time vaults her from the 11th-fastest miler in the class to fourth, sitting only behind Texas commit #7 Sydney Schoeck (15:52.26), as well as fellow Indiana commits #1 Kayla Han (15:56.07), and #11 Paige Downey (16:04.45). Notably, only two Indiana swimmers have contested the 1650 this season, with the fastest time being 16:29.07.

Eichbrecht’s new lifetime best would have placed 10th at the 2025 Big Ten Championships, and would have been quick enough for 22nd at the NCAA Championships.

Eichbrecht leveled up in several events over the past year, highlighted by her 200 free time that now ranks #2 in the class. The four-time Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Division 1 champion in the 200 and 500 free dropped from 1:47.20 to 1:45.05 in the 200 free, tearing down 10-time Olympic medalist Allison Schmitt‘s Michigan high school state record of 1:46.25, which was set back in 2007. With only Charlotte Crush faster in the class, Eichbrecht’s time puts her within eight-tenths of the 2025 NCAA cutline (1:44.74).

In the 500 free, she dropped more than six seconds earlier this season to clock 4:41.54, a Michigan high school state record that stands 2.47 seconds faster than anyone in state history. The time makes her the third-fastest swimmer in the class of 2026.

Eichbrecht’s times will help fill critical gaps on the Hoosiers’ current roster, where she would currently rank first in the 500 free (4:41.54) and the mile (16:06.54), and third in the 200 free (1:45.05). Alongside fellow incoming recruits Han and Downey, she’ll help rebuild a distance group that currently has only two swimmers who have contested the 1650 this season, with the fastest being 16:29.07, and just three swimmers sub-4:50 in the 500 free.

She could also end up focusing on the 100 fly after posting a time of 53.58 at the 2025 Michigan Open. Eichbrecht swam to a second-place finish in that event on Saturday, clocking 53.68, and is slated to contest the 200 fly and 400 IM to conclude the meet on Sunday evening.

She’s gonna be higher than #15 come time for the class re-ranks. She might even be in the top 10
