Rhode Island Women Defend Title at Harold Anderson Invite

The Rhode Island women successfully defended their title at the Harold Anderson Invite in their home pool this weekend. On the men’s side, Providence was victorious in a narrow victory over Maine by less than 10 points. Full results can be found here.

Bryant:

Men-

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men’s swimming and diving team swam to a third-place finish at the Harold Anderson Invitational following a strong performance on day twoSaturday.

The Bulldogs finished the two-day event with 750.5 points.

On Saturday, the 400 free relay team set a meet record with a time of 3:09.65. Ben Schulte(Tumon, Guam), Colin Curtin (Wethersfield, Conn.), Zachary Hannon (Marlborough, Conn.)and Kyle Koziol () combined to take home Bryant’s second meet record of the weekend. Bryant’s 200 medley relay also performed well, as Curtin, Schulte, Boris Paraliticci (Saunderstown, R.I.)and Benon Boyadjian (Middlebury, Conn.) finished second.

Schulte also had a strong individual day, winning the 100 breast and placing second in the 200 breast. Curtin finished 4th in the 200 free and fourth in the 200 back on the afternoon. Boyadjian finished 5th in the 100 fly, Koziol finished sixth in the 100 back, Charlie Broe (New Windsor, N.Y.) finished 4th in the 1650 free, Oliver French (Nashua, N.H.) finished 5th in the 1650 free, Paraliticci finished 3rd in the 100 free and Shane Vyskocil (Parsippany, N.J.) finished 4th in the 200 fly.

Bryant placed 3-4 in the 1-meter dive. Kevin Sullivan (East Lyme, Conn.) placed 3rd and Ryan Sheehy (West Newbury, Mass.) finished 4th.

Women-

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women’s swimming and diving team finished fifth at the Harold Anderson Invitational following a strong performance during session two on Saturday.

Freshman Jillian Rice (Trumbull, Conn.) performed well on Saturday, finishing third in the 200 free and the 100 free. Julia Messina (Canandaigua, N.Y.) finished third in the 100 breast andLauren Doerrman (Oley, Pa.) and Mackenize Kirk (San Jose, Calif.) finished 6-7 in the 400 IM. Kirk also added a ninth-place finish in the 1650 free.

Other top performers included all four freshmen divers, Nicole Salzano (Elmwood Park, N.J.)and Valeria Watson (Mexico City, Mexico). Kelci Abernethy (Chandler, Ariz.) won the 3-meter dive with a score of 233.55. She won both the 1- and 3-meter dive on the weekend. Carissa Stemen (Naples, Fla.), Ann Burdick (Glenmont, N.Y.) and Stephanie Jennings (Elmont, N.Y.)finished 3-4-5 in the event. Salzano and Watson finished 6-7 in the 200 back.

Setting the Scene

Rhode Island came in first place out of six teams in the 20th annual Harold Anderson Invitational. The Rams (876) edged out Providence (771), Assumption (547), Maine (496.5), Bryant (479.5) and Holy Cross (287). Rhody has now won this event nine years in a row.

Highlights From the Pool

  • Rhode Island took the top two spots in the 400 Yard Medley Relay. The Rams also finished in the top two in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, and the 200 Yard Medley Relay.
  • Jenna Kirchoff, 5:05.17, took second in the 500 Yard Freestyle and the 400 Yard IM (4:37.77).
  • In the 50 Yard Freestyle, Porshe’ Ferrell (24.13) andGrace Kneller (24.66) finished 1-2 respectively.
  • Jenna Kirchoff took third in the 1650 Yard Freestyle with a time of 17:36.53.
  • Carly DeLiberty took first in the 200 Yard Breaststroke, 2:23.04.
  • Senior Kate Middleton finished fifth in the 3 mtr Dive with a score 187.00
  • Hannah Homans (57.44) captured the 100 Yard Backstroke.

 HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Sherman placed second in the three meter dive with a score of 215.55 and sixth in the one meter with a score of 185.90.
  • Sophomore Maura Mullaney (Livingston, N.J.) placed third in the 200 Y butterfly with a time of 2:09.82.
  • Sophomore Maeve Westover (Boston, Mass.) finished fourth in the 1650 Y freestyle with a time of 17:39.59 and sixth in the 500 Y freestyle at 5:11.02.
  • Sophomore Katie Conners (Sunfish Lake, Minn.) finished eighth in the 50 Y freestyle with a time of 25.18.
  • The squad of Westover, Conners, sophomore Nina Sparre (Holliston, Mass.) and junior Gina DeFloria(Greensburg, Pa.) finished seventh in the 400 Y freestyle relay with a time of 3:42.58.

  • The Lead: Senior Tyler Wright (Waterboro, Maine) won the 100 Y Butterfly and placed second in the 200 Y Butterfly as the Crusaders finished fourth at the Harold Anderson Invitational at the University of Rhode Island.

 HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wright finished first in the 100 Y butterfly with a time of 52.56, and second in the 200 Y butterfly with a time of 1:58.36.
  • Sophomore Jake Sbarbaro (Lakewood, Colo.) finished seventh in the 200 Y IM at 2:00.53, and the 100 Y backstroke with a time of 58.07.
  • Sophomore Hayden Kucharski (Bloomfield, N.J.) finished sixth in the 400 Y IM with a time of 4:21.96, and eighth in the 200 Y backstroke with a time of 2:04.61.
  • Sophomore Jimmy Nugent (Woodbridge, Conn.) placed fifth in the one meter dive with a score of 165.90, while sophomore Riccardo Marcangeli (Greenwich, Conn.) placed fourth in the three meter dive with a score of 175.50.
  • The squad of Wright, Sbarbaro, junior Alex Young (Natick, Mass.) and freshman Kevin Lagasse(Hopkinton, Mass.) finished sixth in the 400 Y freestyle relay at 3:19.47.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Providence finished first with a score of 817, followed by Maine at 808.5, Bryant at 750.5, Holy Cross at 544 and Rhode Island at 248.

Providence:

KINGSTON, R.I. – The Providence College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams competed in the Harold Anderson Invitational hosted by the University of Rhode Island on Friday, Nov. 20 and Saturday, Nov. 21. The men’s team came in first place with 817 points, while the women’s team took second place with 771 points. The Harold Anderson Invitational included 12 All-Time Top Ten performances from the men and 21 All-Time Top Ten performances from the women, including three women’s team records.

The women’s team was led by sophomore Katherine Fallon (Warren, N.J), who broke three individual records (500y freestyle, 1000y freestyle, and 1650y freestyle). She also took first in her three individual events (200y freestyle, 500y freestyle, and 1650y freestyle). Fallon’s 500yd Free (4:57.27) broke Michele Debari’s record (4:58.10) set in 1993. Fallon’s 1650yd freestyle (17:13.81) broke Courtney Larcom’s record (12:47.22) set in 2009, also Fallon swam a team record in the1000yd Freestyle (10:24.59), which broke Michele Debari’s record (10:31.96) set in 1992. In addition to Fallon’s 1650y freestyle team record, Fallon set a meet record .

Also pacing the women’s team was junior Helen Smith (Belmont, Mass.), who finished first in the 200y backstroke (2:04.87). Sophomore Kendall Jerzyk (Madison, Conn.) placed second in the 1m dive (211.20) and freshman Abby Czerniecki (Haddonfield, N.J.) took second in the 100y breaststroke (1:06.82).

On the men’s side, Senior Zach Begnaud (Natchitoches, La.) placed first in the 500y freestyle (4:39.83). Begnaud also took second place in the 1650y freestyle (16:27.70) and the 200y freestyle (1:44.30). Freshman Ricky Billig (Sudbury, Mass.) took first place in the 200y backstroke (1:52.23) followed by freshman Jonathan Batista (Southboro, Mass) in second (1:53.82). Billig finished second in the 200y IM (1:55.83) and the 100y backstroke (52.68). Sophomore Connor Fabian (LaGrange Park, Ill.) earned an individual first place for the Friars as well, finishing the 200y breaststroke in 2:07.00.

Other second place finishes for the men include Sophomore Austin McGowan (Mansfield, Mass) in the400y IM (4:14.24), Junior Michael Martinico (Nesconset, N.Y.) in the 100y freestyle (48.60), sophomore Chris Asgian (Loveland, Ohio) in the 100y butterfly (52.83), and the 200y freestyle relay team (1:27.90). The 200y relay team consisted of Johnny Mariner (Marion, Mass.), Michael Martinico, Zach Begnaud, and Charlie Sabaitis (Spring Lake, N.J.).

47 Friars have now met the BIG EAST Qualifying Standards following this invitational. The updated list of Friars who will be heading to Long Meadow, N.Y. for the BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships thus far are:

The Harold Anderson Invitational marks the last event for the Friars in the 2015 calendar year. The Friars will return to the pool when the men’s team travels to Villanova, Penn. to face the Villanova Wildcats on Saturday, Jan. 16 at noon.

THE BASICS:

-The Lead: The Assumption College swimming and diving team broke three program records this weekend at the Harold Anderson Invitational hosted by the University of Rhode Island. The Hounds finished third of six teams as the only non-division I program in the competition while tallying nine top-three performances on the weekend. Several Hounds also completed the meet nationally ranked.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-Sophomore Niamh Morgan (Bettystown, Ireland / Sacred Heart School) enjoyed a standout performance in the competition, claiming two first-place victories that included a new school record. Morgan broke her own record in the 200 IM with her time of 2:07.38 for her first-place finish in the event. She surpasses the old record of 2:07.99, which she set last season as a freshman on February 6, 2015.

-Morgan also finished first in the 400 IM with her season-best time of 4:32.11 and third in the 200 backstroke, touching the wall in 2:06.15.

-Freshman Shannon Quirk (Wakefield, Mass. / Wakefield Memorial) shattered the 1,650 freestyle record with her second-place finish in the event. She posted an impressive time of 17:22.60 to top the previous record of 17:39.34 set by junior Rachel Lanam (Sebastian, Fla. / Sebastian River) on February 8, 2015.

-Quirk also notched one more top-three finish in the 500 freestyle. She clocked a time of 5:06.70 for the bronze, just less than two seconds off of the Assumption record.

-Senior Victoria Weber (Augusta, Maine / Cony) also displayed an impressive performance on the weekend, collecting three individual top-three finishes and one relay finish. She placed second with her season-best time of 58.46 in the 100 backstroke and finished third in the 200 IM (2:10.07) behind Morgan.

-Weber also swam a career-best time of 58.51 in the 100 butterfly for third place among the strong competition and helped the Hounds’ 200 medley relay team to a third place finish in 1:50.08. The squad consisted of Weber in the lead leg spot, junior Rachel Gagnon (Tolland, Conn. / Tolland), sophomore Courtney Barr (Waltham, Mass. / Matignon) and freshman Caroline Cole (Highland Mills, N.Y. / Monroe Woodbury).

-Freshman Ali Petrozza (North Andover, Mass. / Austin Preparatory School) notched a fourth-place finish in the 200 butterfly with her time of 2:10.59.

-URI earned the overall win on the weekend with a final score of 876, followed by Providence (771) and Assumption (547). Rounding out the teams were the University of Maine, Orono with 496.5, Bryant (479.5) and Holy Cross (287).

BEHIND THE RESULTS:

-Quirk’s time in the 1,650 freestyle currently ranks her the fastest in the country. She now holds the top spot in the nation with her time of 17:22.60.

-As part of the 1,650 freestyle, Quirk also swam 1,000 yards of the freestyle stroke. Her time of 10:29.61 in the first 1,000 yards of the event also breaks the Assumption record for the 1,000 free, surpassing Quirk’s previous record of 10:36.14. Her new 1,000 freestyle time ranks her 12th in the country.

-Three of Morgan’s times on the weekend rank her in the top 15 in the nation. Her 200 IM ranks fifth in the country, her 400 IM time is good for ninth in the nation while her 200 back time is currently in 13th.

UP NEXT:

-The Hounds are set to return to action on Friday, Dec. 4, through Sunday, Dec. 6 at the WPI Gompei Invitational. Last season, Assumption brought the win over 12 participating teams at the meet.
