UMass Hires Former Cal Captain Monobe As New Assistant

The Massachussetts women’s swimming & diving team has hired Ellie Monobe as a new assistant coach – marking Monobe’s first collegiate coaching position.

Monobe was a four-year letter winner at Cal and was on two of their NCAA Championship teams, including as a captain during the 2010-2011 season.

Past stops on Monobe’s resume include a season as co-head coach of the Sun Valley Swim Team in California, where she helped lead the team to a 2nd-place finish in the Lafayette Swim Conference – their highest placing in program history. She also spent a year as a coach of the Bentley School varsity high school program, a year as a compliance assistant at San Jose State, and a year as a graduate manager for San Jose State.

Monobe will now travel across the country after a lifetime lived in California for the blistery winters of Amherst, Massachusetts, and UMass head coach Bob Newcomb is excited about her presence and background.

“We are very excited to have Ellie join our staff,” Newcomb said. “She brings with her a tremendous background in collegiate and club swimming and will help us continue with the growth our program has shown in the last four years.”

The team placed 3rd out of 10 teams at the 2014 A10 Championships last year. Monobe’s first meet as assistant coach will be this Saturday when they welcome in Army for a dual meet.
