The NCAA has released the pre-cut psych sheets for the Men’s Division I Championship, being held March 26-28, 2015 at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center in Iowa City, Iowa.

See pre-cut psych sheet here

This is the preliminary list of entrants, submitted by college coaches for consideration for entry into the meet, which is not the same as the invited list.

Stay tuned as we further analyze the psych sheet, each individual event, and the implications for the team race in the men’s Division I meet, over the next couple of days.

Some things I noticed:
Okubo is in 200 IM/400 IM/200 fly instead of the 200 back/fly double like at Ivies.
Messerschmidt is in 100 back on day 2 instead of 200 free like last year.
Tynan Stewart is in 200 IM/100 fly/200 fly this year instead of 200 IM/400 IM/200 back as last year.
I can’t find anything else really unexpected.

Pretty strange that Tynan opted out of his top 8 finish event from last year (4IM) in favor of the 100 fly which he doesn’t even have a circle seeded time?!?! Never heard of such a switch. Hope he can bring in some big points for UGA this year!

If the meet was scored as is….Texas and USC would tie for first at 332 points (not including divers as those events haven’t finished up yet). USC might not be as rested as everyone thinks, could be a dangerous top 3 swim team.

Looking at this got me thinking; will we start seeing more athletes swimming 2 individual events and 5 relays? (not sure if that’s even allowed under the rules) It looks like the ability to score in 3 individual events is a lot tougher, and more rare as the focus is so much more on relays and specialization. Just some random thoughts, not selling anything…like to get other people’s perspective.

I believe the limit is 3 individual events and 7 total, so guy/gals can opt out of a third individual event if they choose. You see it a lot at D3 where a team qualifies one relay, then swim the 4 other relays with that same team and those with B cuts swimming an individual event or two. Different selection process at D1, but also a big jump in depth. Not sure too many swimmers are versatile enough to contribute on all 5 relays at the D1 level. Certainly something teams consider.

It’s probably a limited group of guys that are good enough to contribute to a scoring 200 MR and 800 FR and not good enough to score in their 3rd individual event.

I believe last year Kip Darmody swam all five relays for Texas. Can’t think of anyone else off the top of my head.

Was thinking of a guy like Gkolomeev: He’s a lock in the 50 & 100 free, probably a long shot to get into consolations in the 100 fly. But let’s say he can split a 1:34 high (just making it up on the 800 free relay and help them move into the top 12. That scenario would yield a lot more points than him placing low in the 100 fly.

I would think it’s a rare bird who can truly be effective for his team on all 5 relays (talking about the big 6-8 schools: TEX, CAL, STAN, MICH, FLO, AUB, GA etc) without being a 3 event scorer on his own. Those teams also usually have the depth that it doesn’t even hurt the relays to have guys swim 3.

On the women’s side Ivy Martin springs to mind, but even she has a great chance at scoring a 3rd.

It’s gotta a perfect storm of your team not being quite deep enough to score the relay without you, you not having the third lock down event (yet somehow being able to lift your relay to a scoring position).… Read more »

It makes sense if you have a 3rd event where you are not likely to score many points. Swimmers I know of who have done it recently are all women: Margo Geer, Snodgrass, Sinead Russell. For Geer, AZ’s next best freestyler was much slower, and she best probably only a B final 200 freestyler. For Sndograss/Russell, they are clearly top 4 on their team in the 50-200 free, but not expected scorers in the 50.

Kip Darmody did it last year.

Some people I could see doing 2-5:
Sarah Denninghoff
Faith Johnson
Gkolomeev
Kyle Darmody?

A guy like Justin Lynch could do that in a year or two if he’s like 19.5-42-134 free and 45-142 fly

Texas takes 1st, 2nd, 5th seeds in the 100 fly, and 1st, 2nd, 4th seeds in the 200 fly. Maybe there is something about those snorkels….

haven’t heard about cordes all season, any reason why or is Arizona usually just kinda quiet?

They have been quiet so far but they do not have much room to make a statement at NCAAs. They will only qualify 5 guys individually, max of 6. Yes they have stars Cordes and Tandy but even then, that is half of a medley relay. Either they have a trick up their sleeves or this will not be a good year for them.

Didn’t know where the appropriate place to ask this question was, but do different college teams wear different swim suits? Where can I find more info on this?

Do people know what Cal, Texas, Michigan, etc. are wearing? Someone mentioned that Texas wears a Japanese brand but I forget the specifics.

The best place to find out is to go to a meet and look. Otherwise, if you know someone on the team, ask them. I will try my best while at NCAAs to talk to some swimmers and see what they are wearing. I’ve always liked the Arena suits the best.

50 free is interesting. They’ve got a three way tie for 29. Clifton and Carter are in otherwise, but Gimondi is not. On CollegeSwimming he’s listed 33rd behind Conger and Molacek, who aren’t swimming it, Alan Winder who didn’t actually swim 19.4, and Corey Main’s SEC time trial 200 free relay leadoff time, but Main is entered here with a 19.5. If the cut line is at 30, I guess Cal has their 16th man in.

Actually it seems he’s likely to be the first out. We’ll see if that’s correct and if Texas drops a swimmer.

Or is that a mistake since he’s listed as row 30. So many questions.

Conger in the 1 fly / 1 back / 2 fly. Probably the smart play.
