Michael Jamieson, Brits to Compete at Fall World Cup Races

Perhaps largely in preparation for their home-hosted Duel in the Pool meet in December, a group of Brits have committed to swim at the Russia/Middle Eastern leg of the FINA World Cup Series in October.

The Moscow meet runs from October 12th-13th, the Dubai meet runs from October 17th-18th, and the Doha, Qatar meet runs from October 20th-21st.

Chief among them is Olympic 200 breaststroke silver medalist Michael Jamieson, along with his Bath ITC training partner Sophie Allen.

Jamieson is very limited on experience in this series; his first World Cup swim came earlier this year in Eindhoven and Germany, where he took 4th in the 100 breast and 3rd in the 200 breast in Eindhoven, and then in Germany took 3rd again in the 200 but failed to even final in the 100 against a very good field. Between those two meets, though, he went his fastest-ever 100 time in short course and second-fastest 200 time in short course (missing by .04).

Jamieson sits outside of the top 20 in the overall standings through two meets.

Allen, however, is a World Cup veteran. She went toe-to-toe at last year’s series with Katinka Hosszu many times, and came away with 6 medals. This will be her first meet of this year’s series, however. They will be joined on all three legs by Ben Proud from Plymouth Leander, who had a huge breakthrough this year and broke the British National Record in the 50 fly.

Also taking on this swing of the trip will be 2011 World Champion backstroker Liam Tancock for the Doha and Dubai meets; plus Georgia Davies and Fran Halsall for the Dubai meet only.

Top 20 men’s, then women’s, standings thus far in the meet are below.
