Brandon Christian, who is from Largo, Florida –just south of Clearwater– has opted to follow in the footsteps of both his parents and matriculate at West Virginia University.

“I have chosen to commit to West Virginia University! It was a goal of mine to attend this school ever since I started swimming when I was 5 years old. My parents met there and are both alumni and I have a lot of family members up there. I visit the state at least twice a year and have always taken a look at the campus while I was up there. I took my official visit a few weeks ago and immediately fell in love. I love the coaching staff, the team, and all the campus life as well.”

Christian was a top-8 finalist in both the 200 free (6th) and 500 free (5th), swimming for Seminole High School at last year’s Florida High School Class 4A Championships. The prior year he was 16th in the 200 and 8th in the 500. Christian’s top yards times are:

  • 200 free – 1:41.37
  • 500 free – 4:32.65
  • 1000 free – 9:26.23
  • 1650 free – 15:56.15
  • 200 IM – 1:56.48
  • 400 IM – 4:07.43

Christian has made steady progress over the last several years in his top events and is developing into a strong distance freestyler. This summer he dropped over 13 seconds in the 800m free (8:37.21), and nearly 2 seconds in the 200m free (1:56.59). He has had similar drops in short course, as well. Christian’s best 1650 time would have scored sixth at Big 12 Conference Championships last year and his 500 would have scored in the middle of the “B” final.

Christian told SwimSwam, “This year, I want to better my times as much as possible before competing at a much bigger scale in college. Seminole High School, as well at my club team West Florida Lightning Aquatics (WFLA) have made it a pleasure to swim and have pushed me to reach this lifetime goal of mine. This is a dream come true and I can’t wait to see what the future brings!”

The Mountaineers now have verbal commitments from Christian and Gabriel Swardson.
