Coach of CIF-SS Division I Defending Champs Resigns; Katie McLaughlin to Leave Program

In an abrupt turn as the California high school season is heating up, Katie McLaughlin and her mother Mary McLaughlin, the school’s coach, have left the program, according to OCVarsity.com.

You’ll have to log- in at OC Varsity to see the full story (that’s only fair), but Mary McLaughlin is the coach who has led JSerra High School to the last two CIF Southern Section Division I titles out west, and Katie McLaughlin, a National Junior Team member, set division records in the 100 fly and 200 free.

This should put a big shakeup into the California Southern Section championship race. McLaughlin is a junior, and Jserra is a private school, so McLaughlin is free to withdraw from the school at her will and transfer. The CIF’s full transfer eligibility guidelines can be seen here.

There will be an appeals process in place that determines if McLaughlin’s transfer was a valid reason, based on the above-referenced rules.

McLaughlin was named a Swammy honorable mention National Age Group Swimmer of the Year in 2013 for 15-16’s.
