Yacoviello, Johnson, Rusnock Lead Charge at YMCA Nationals; Spartanburg Sweeps Men’s Relays

The 2025 YMCA Long Course National Championships, held at Florida Aquatics Swimming & Training in Ocala over five days, saw numerous dominant swims from swimmers Molly Yacoviello, Connor Johnson, and John Rusnock. Greater Spartanburg YMCA swept all the men’s relay events en route to the men’s team title.

York and York County YMCA’s Molly Yacoviello compiled one of the most complete showings on the women’s side. The South Carolina commit notched three individual event wins on the week.

She got things started by obliterating her best time in the 200 breaststroke, where she won by nearly two seconds in 2:31.59. Her next event win came in the form of the 400 IM, where she dropped over two seconds from her previous best to post the only sub-5:00 performance in the field (4:58.36). Closing out her meet with a win in the 100 breast, clocking a lifetime best of 1:11.42 to sweep both the 100 and 200 breaststrokes to cap off a three-win competition.

Fifteen-year-old Claire Burns (York) and Upper Main Line’s Ellie McNamara each won the distance events. Burns’ first splash came in the 800 free as she obliterated her personal best winning time of 9:03.58 after placing second at this meet last year. Later in the meet, Burns came out victorious in the 200 IM as her 2:18.22 effort was nearly four seconds ahead of the field.

A Richmond commit, McNamara took the 400 free with a 4:21.87 winning time, just over a second clear of Burns (4:22.90). McNamara won the 1500 free on the final night of the meet in 17:19.08, dropping nine seconds from her 2024 time to take home her second title of the week.

On the men’s side, Princeton commit John Rusnock had two dominant performances. He cruised to gold in the 200 butterfly in 2:02.61, three and a half seconds ahead of everyone. Later in the week, he held off Lakeland Hills’ Connor Johnson in the 200 IM with a 2:03.83, out-splitting him on the final 50 by nearly a second and a half.

Johnson was in the zone in the backstroke events. He dominated the 200 back, winning by over six seconds and a time of 2:00.68. He followed that up with a more than half-second personal best of 55.67 in the 100 back, breaking 56 for the first time, to top the field by over two seconds.

Greater Spartanburg YMCA’s men’s team hit a perfect 5-for-5 on the relay front all week long, setting the tone with a meet record in the 200 medley relay (1:43.53) and taking off from there. They notched a win in the 200 free relay (1:33.78) before subsequently winning in the 400 free relay (3:27.74). The winning streak continued in the 800 free relay (7:40.59), then they finished the meet with a win in the 400 medley relay (3:49.97). The relay sweep powered Spartanburg to the overall men’s team title.

Other Women’s Event Winners:

  • Kiersten Dietschweiler (16) won the 100 free in 57.71, narrowly beating Akron commit Cora Spetz (57.76).
    • Added a second win in the 200 free with a 2:05.32, dropping over a second from her previous best.
  • Anna Kilponen (Villanova commit) took the 100 fly in 1:01.37, backing up her prelim top seeds, and also won the 50 fly in 27.80 to complete the sprint fly sweep.
  • Taylor Lieshman (15) took the win in the 200 back in 2:16.92, over three seconds ahead of the field.
  • Grace Hunt (Georgia commit) clocked a personal best of 32.89 to win the 50 breast, breaking the 33-second barrier for the first time.
  • Serena Dickey (Lakeland Hills, 16) swam to a best time of 2:16.31 to win the 200 fly.
  • Katie Lawrence won the 50 free in 26.66; the top five finishers were separated by just 0.33 seconds.
  • Natalia Gajecki (Bucknell commit) won the 50 back in 29.56, finishing just 0.05 ahead of Tennessee commit Alyssa Claborn.
    • Gajecki returned to win the 100 back in 1:03.89, her first time under 1:04.
  • Lakeland Hills won the 200 medley relay in 1:57.06, coming into finals from the fourth seed, and closed out the women’s meet with a win in the 400 medley relay, clocking 4:16.43.
  • Powel Crosley Won the 200 free relay in 1:42.71, the only team under 1:43.
    • They later added a victory in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:52.92.
  • Upper Main Line took the 800 free relay in 8:28.96, finishing over three seconds ahead of York.

Other Men’s Event Winners:

  • Lincoln Council (Catawba College commit) won the 800 free in 8:27.99, just ahead of 14-year-old Charlie Brown.
    • Council nabbed another win in the 1500 free in 16:14.61, narrowly off his personal best.
  • Kenneth Barnicle (Cal commit) took the title in the 100 free in 50.12, just over a tenth off his personal best.
    • Additionally, Barnicle won the 50 back in 25.71, slightly off his best of 25.62.
  • Jimmy Beeson (BYU commit) came out victorious in the 100 fly in 53.19, nearly a second faster than his previous best.
    • Beeson claimed the 50 fly in 24.59, just 0.05 slower than his lifetime best.
  • Domingo Gatti out-touched Cody Lonsberry in the 200 free, 1:54.56 to 1:54.59.
  • Kaden Fatta (Loyola Maryland commit) posted a significant drop to win the 200 breast in 2:19.18, down from 2:22.55.
  • Evan Hepburn (Bucknell commit) won the 50 breast in 28.95, the only swimmer in the field under 29 seconds.
  • Sebastian Tith (16) nabbed 100 breast in a lifetime best, edging out 50 breast winner Hepburn.
  • Brayden Franklin (West Virginia commit) took the 400 IM in 4:32.92, just ahead of William Reese.
  • Oliver Stull (West Virginia commit) was victorious in the 400 free in 4:03.41, a season-best time and 2.5 seconds ahead of runner-up Grant Smith.
