Wyoming Men and Women Top Cal Poly

The Cowboys and Cowgirls took on the Cal Poly Mustangs on the road at the Anderson Aquatic Center, outscoring the Mustang men 180 to 109 and defeating the Cal Poly women 176 to 118. The Wyoming men won 15 of 16 evens, while the Cowgirls took 13 of the 16 events.

“I thought we did a great job of preparing and executing and it helped us have some really good swims,” UW associate head coach Matt Leach said in a statement to UW athletics. “We had some people swimming in different events that allowed us to pick up more confidence.”

The Wyoming women and men swept the 400 medley relay to start off the meet. The women’s A team touched first in 3:51.30, ahead of their B team (3:53.90). On the men’s side, the Cowboys’ A team touched first in 3:26.66, just ahead of their B team (3:26.93) and with their C team following up for third in 3:27.73.

The Cowgirls completed a commanding 1-2-3-4 sweep of the 1000 Free, led by Wyoming junior Nicole Hlavacek (10:25.09). Her teammate, junior Lauren McClure followed up for second in 10:28.54, just ahead of senior Cowgirl Aliyah Mikulski (10:29.76). Wyoming junior Emma Dow touched fourth in her exhibition swim of 10:35.53. On the men’s side, Wyoming junior Ryan Nelson finished ten seconds ahead of the rest of the field with a 9:25.84. He touched ahead of a 2-3-4-5 Cal Poly charge led by freshman Peyton Leeson (9:35.87) and junior Dustin Bolt (9:36.43).

Cal Poly’s Bonnie Diamond (1:53.54) and her junior teammate Alisha Bender (1:54.66) picked up first and second in the 200 Free ahead of Wyoming freshman Kelly Anna Sheldon (1:55.22). Cowboy senior Adam Kalms picked up his first of three wins in the men’s 200 Free (1:39.10), ahead of junior teammate Kevin Waller (1:43.11).

Wyoming pressed on for wins in the next four events, starting with sophomore Cowgirl Abby Sullivan‘s first-place in the 100 Back (58.39), just one tenth of a second ahead of Mustang junior Allison de Peralta (58.49). Wyoming sophomore Emily Stevens followed up for third in 58.95. Wyoming juniors Austin Layman (52.23) and Brendan Costello (52.97) performed a 1-2 sweep in the men’s 100 Back.

Wyoming sophomore Emily Ridout (1:04.41) took home the win in the 100 Breast ahead of freshman teammate Maria Harutjunjan (1:04.88) and Cal Poly’s Sage Speak (1:05.50). Junior Cowboy Kyle Scalise took the event on the men’s side (57.05) ahead of Caly Poly senior Paolo Stanchi (58.90).

Cal Poly junior Belen Enguidanos took home another event win for the Mustangs and broke Wyoming’s winning streak in the 200 Fly (2:05.46) ahead of Wyoming senior Claudia Carlson (2:05.93). Mustang freshman Shaelin Morefield was close behind for third in 2:06.65. On the men’s side, Wyoming junior George Eglesfield touched first in 1:50.90 ahead of a Cal Poly freshman trio of Justin Dedianous (1:52.52), Shannon Fong (1:54.43) and Brandon Nguyen (1:54.75).

The Wyoming women took a 1-2-3 sweep in the 50 Free, led by sophomore Danielle Badger (24.40). Her teammates Rae-Rae Dydo (24.65) and Mary Uselmann (24.85) touched in second and third, respectively. The Cowboys kept up the sweeps with a 1-2 finish in the men’s event. Wyoming freshman Kyle White (21.23) finished just two one-hundredths of a second ahead of senior teammate Ryan O’Leary (21.25) for first and second.

Wyoming’s powerful sweeps continued into the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, with the Cowboys and Cowgirls taking the top three spots on both the men’s and women’s sides. Wyoming sophomore Keely Bishop (244.05) led the field, with her teammates Kari Campbell (238.80) and Holly Heussner (220.35) scoring second and third in the women’s 1-meter. Wyoming sophomore Jake Rehmeier took first for the men in the 3-meter, scoring a 270.75 ahead of freshman teammates Ryan Russi (259.95) and  Austin Rettinghouse (254.70).

With the exhibition swims in full swing, Cowgirl Emily Ridaut picked up her second win of the meet in the 100 Free (52.40) ahead of Cal Poly freshman Bonnie Diamond (53.13) and her teammate, junior Alisha Bender (53.30). Cowboy senior Adam Kalms took his second win in the men’s 100 Free (45.73) ahead of Cal Poly sophomore Jack Kenner (47.30) and his freshman teammate John Hornacek (48.57).

Cowgirl Abby Sullivan completed a sweep of the Backstroke events with a win in the 200 Back (2:06.45) ahead of Cal Poly freshman Caitlin Cox (2:07.40). On the men’s side, Wyoming junior Brendan Costello took home the win for the Cowboys (1:49.91) ahead of sophomore teammate Pat Jones (1:55.72) for a 1-2 cover.

Wyoming freshman Maria Harutjunjan (2:19.76) touched just ahead of Cal Poly’s Sage Speak (2:20.25) for the win in the 200 Breast. The race was equally tight in the men’s 200 Breast, as Cal Poly junior Mickey Mackle (2:06.19) edged Wyoming junior Kyle Scalise  (2:06.56) for first.

Cowgirl Keara Chang brought home the win for Wyoming in the 500 Free (5:02.86) ahead of Cal Poly freshman Sophia Kuvan (5:09.83).  Wyoming junior Ryan Nelson touched first in the men’s 500 Free with a 4:35.64, just ahead of Cal Poly freshman Nolan Newland (4:36.12).

The Wyoming women continued their first-place sweep with a win in the 100 Fly by junior Molly Coonce (56.72). She finished ahead of Mustang junior Taylor Guy (58.60) and her freshman teammate Shaelin Morefield (58.64) followed up just four one-hundredths of a second behind for third. Cowboy George Eglesfield took the men’s 100 Fly for a complete sweep of the Fly events (49.94) ahead of Cal Poly freshman Justin Dedianous (50.41).

Cal Poly’s Lauren Pierce broke the Cowgirls’ winning streak with a first-place finish in the 3-meter event (261.67). Wyoming senior Holly Heussner (248.77) followed up for second place. On the men’s side, Wyoming sophomore Jake Rehmeier took the 1-meter (231.60), outscoring Cal Poly freshman Brady Shutt (185.17).

Wyoming senior Claudia Carlson touched first in the women’s 200 IM (2:08.28) ahead of Cal Poly freshman Sage Speak (2:11.40) and her teammate Jessi Modlich (2:13.81). Cowboy senior Adam Kalms secured his third win of the meet in the men’s event (1:51.65), touching ahead of Mustang junior Mickey Mackle (1:53.49).

To top the meet off, both the Wyoming men and women took home wins in the final 200 Free Relay, with the women swimming a 1:36.78 and the men touching in 1:23.70.
