LARAMIE, Wyo. (11/3/23) – The University of Wyoming swimming and diving team received a good test from Colorado Mesa on Friday at Laramie High School. However, both the Cowgirls and Cowboys prevailed to remain unbeaten.

“From a standpoint of swimming, this was one of our biggest challenges,” head coach Dave Denniston said. “The character really showed through on our team. Mesa is no joke. They’re one of the top two teams in Division II in the country. They’re a fast program, and they came and raced, and our guys stepped up, and it was fun day.”

Wyoming’s women’s team downed the Mavericks, 173-127, to move to 4-0 on the season. The men’s team outlasted the Mavericks, 159-141, to improve to 3-0 on the year.

“It took a full effort from everybody from leadership to performance,” Denniston said. “Today was a tough meet, and I was glad we were able to come away with a win.”

The 200-yard medley relay team – comprised of Quinn CynorJohn WarginGavin Smith and Quinn Teller – led off the meet with a victory for the men, logging a time of 1:29.66.

The Cowgirls went 1-2 in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Maisyn Klimczak won, boasting a time of 10:30.80, while Sage Morton took runner-up after clocking in at 10:33.66. Those two did the same thing in the 500-yard freestyle except Morton placed first with a time of 5:05.50 and Klimczak second with a 5:06.64.

The Cowboys one-upped the women, taking the top three spots in the 1,000. Charlie Clark touched first with a time of 9:47.17. Derek Long took second with a time of 9:50.99, and Caleb Ozenne placed third after swimming a 9:55.12.

Clark and Long made a carbon copy of that finish in the 500 free. Clark won, clocking in at 4:41.59, and Long was second at 4:46.17.

Tara Joyce placed first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.90. Joyce also took first in the 100-yard freestyle after swimming a 51.55.

Cynor and Gavin went 1-2 in the 200 free. Cynor went a 1:40.31, and Smith recorded a time of 1:41.43. Smith added a first in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking in at 48.76.

Brynlee Busskohl topped the field in the 100-yard breaststroke after registering a time of 1:03.74. Wargin won the men’s race after going a 56.76.

Busskohl added to her first-place finishes with one in the 200-yard breaststroke, swimming a 2:20.85. Sydney McKenzie placed runner-up with a time of 2:25.60.

Lauren Swartz claimed first in the 50-yard freestyle. Jakob Borrman made it a Wyoming sweep in the 50, winning the men’s race with a time of 21.15.

Katie Ford won the 200-yard butterfly with a 2:07.00. Heidi Billings touched first in the 200-yard backstroke, recording a time of 2:02.47. Drew Ravegum rounded out the victorious individuals, topping the field in the 200 breast after logging a time of 2:05.86.

The 400-yard freestyle relay – comprised of Kali FranckowiakRachael Horne, Joyce and Carly Palmer – put an exclamation point on the meet, touching first in a time of 3:28.61. The men’s 400 free relay team – of Borrman, Smith, Reilly Gilbert and Cynor – followed suit with a first-place finish in a time of 3:03.68.

Wyoming’s women’s team has a quick turnaround. The Cowgirls compete against Northern Colorado on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Laramie High School.

LARAMIE, Wyo.— The Colorado Mesa University swimming and diving teams won a combined 13 events and had a multitude of quick times and strong diving performances but came up short of upsetting NCAA Division I and still undefeated Wyoming in an inter-divisional dual on Friday here at Laramie High School.

The Maverick men, ranked third in Division II, won seven of 16 events but fell to the Cowboys, 159-141 while the CMU women, ranked second in the division, claimed six victories in a 173-127 set-back.

Ben Sampson won two events for the Maverick men while Jenna Hurley swept the diving events to lead the CMU women.  Redshirt senior Isaiah Cheeks and freshman Jax Juarros also won men’s diving events with NCAA Pre-Championship qualification scores as the Maverick divers swept all four events on the boards.

Meanwhile, the Maverick swimmers combined for numerous season-bests and seven new or improved NCAA Championship “B” cut times.

The dual began with diving as Hurley led a 1-2-3 Maverick sweep on the 1-meter with a 6-dive score of 234.15 points to finish ahead of Kenya Meyer (225.83) and Ally Hrncir (215.85).  Meanwhile, Hurley won the 3-meter with 256.43 points while Meyer took third with 229.28.

On the men’s side, Juarros won the 1-meter with 287.18 points, getting his first of two necessary NCAA championship qualifying scores.  Fellow Maverick freshman Ty Mitton took second with 276.45 points.

Meanwhile, Cheeks, who secured himself a spot at the national pre-championship meet, taking the 3-meter competition with 323.48 points, well above the qualifying standard of 295.00.  He had already set his first of two needed qualifying marks at the season-opening Intermountain Shootout.  Juarros took third on the 3-meter with 271.16 points while Mitton was fourth with a score of 258.30.

The Mavericks swimmers then took to the pool as the women’s 200 medley relay squad of Agata NaskretMaddi MoranKiara Borchardt and Elli Williams claimed victory in 1:44.04 to get things started.

Sampson, Mauricio PosadasDejan Urbanek and Jameson McEnaney then took second in the men’s event with a time of 1:30.19.

Naskret was the Mavs’ next winner as she took the 100 back in 55.27 seconds, which with the altitude adjustment lowered her time to an improved NCAA “B” cut season-best of 55.12.  She also later set another NCAA “B” cut time of 2:04.15 (2:02.55-altitude adjusted) to finish third in the 200 back and moved to third (100 back) and ninth (200 back) in CMU history.

Meanwhile, Andrew Scoggin won the men’s 100 back in 50.55 seconds.

Dejan Urbanek also got into the winner’s circle, taking the 200 fly in 1:51.20, surpassing the “B” cut standard with his altitude-adjusted time of 1:49.60.

Sampson was CMU’s next winner as he took the 100 free by a wide margin in a season-best and NCAA provisional qualifying time 44.91 seconds (44.76-adjusted).

The Maverick men then swept the top three spots in the 200 back with Jeremy Koch taking the win in 1:53.30.  Scoggin was second in 1:53.74 while Luka Samsonov touched third in 1:55.22.

The CMU women were nearly as good in the 100 fly as Grand Canyon transfer Anna Beck claimed her first collegiate win in a time of 57.95 seconds, out-touching Borchardt (57.96).

The Mavs also swept the 400 IM wins as Benedict Nagy won the women’s event in 4:31.71, while moving into the No. 5 spot of CMU history with her converted and NCAA “B” cut mark of 4:24.71.  Teammate Sophia Baines was second in 4:35.14.

Meanwhile, Sampson claimed the men’s win by a wide margin with a time of 4:02.40, 5.54 seconds ahead of Wyoming’s top finisher.

The Mavericks also had several other second place finishes as Ada Qunell took the silver in the 200 free with a NCAA “B” cut time of 1:54.13 (1:52.53-converted).

Posadas also had a second place finish in the 100 breast (57.19) while Nagy took second in the women’s 200 fly, touching in 2:07.21 to move into the No. 6 spot of CMU history in that discipline with a converted time of 2:05.61.

The Mavs also took second in both 50 free races as Williams finished in 24.25 seconds in the women’s event while Kuba Kiszczak touched in 21.18 to claim the men’s silver, just ahead of McEnaney, who was third in 21.23.

Matoskova also had an improved NCAA “B” cut time of 2:03.85 (2:02.25-converted) to take second in the 200 back while Urbanek took second in the 100 fly at 50.48.

The Mavericks also capped the meet with second place finishes in both 400 free relays.  Qunell, Wiiliams, Olivia Hansson and Lauren White finished the women’s race in 3:31.34 while Kiszczak, Marcos OteroAziz Ghaffari and Jackson Moe combined for a time of 3:04.51 in the men’s event.

The Mavericks will tangle with Wyoming again later this month when CMU will host the TYR Invitational in their competition.  That 4-day meet, which will also include Utah and seven total women’s teams and five men’s squads, begins on Nov. 15 in the El Pomar Natatorium.
