Wisconsin Secures Verbal Pledge from Maryland High School Record-holder Madison Waechter

Madison Waechter of Silver Spring, Maryland has verbally committed to University of Wisconsin-Madison for 2017-18.

“I’m so excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim for Wisconsin-Madison next year! Everything about Wisconsin is a great fit for me- the academics, coaches, and the team is all I want and more. I could not be more excited for the next four years as a Badger!”

Waechter is a senior at Montgomery Blair High School and the Maryland high school state record holder in the 500 freestyle. She won the event at the 2016 MPSSAA 4A3A State Swim Championships in 4:53.48, fully 1.5 seconds under the previous MPSSAA state mark. She also finished second in the 200 free (1:51.25), and swam the third leg of both freestyle relays (24.93 for the 4×50 and 54.21 on the 4×100).

Waechter swims year-round for Rockville Montgomery Swim Club. She was a multiple-event finalist at the NCSA Spring Championships, and again at the Potomac Valley Swimming Long Course Championships in July.

Her top times are:

200 free 1:49.00 2:05.47
500/400 free 4:51.41 4:19.39

Shouldn’t it be MD state high-school record? The Maryland ‘state record’ is either a 4:30 swum by Katie Hoff in ’07 (the MD LSC record) or a 4:26 swum by Ledecky in ’15 (the PV LSC record).
