Winter Juniors Qualifier Andy Commins (2024) Verbally Commits to Auburn

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

High school junior Andy Commins has announced his intention to swim and study at Auburn University beginning in the fall of 2024.

“The facilities, coaches, and team are unmatched. The second I stepped on campus I knew it was the place for me! Thank you to my family and all of my coaches that have gotten me here! Super excited to show the world what this program is capable of!”

Commins hails from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and swims for Carrboro High School and North Carolina Aquatic Club. He specializes in mid-distance free, fly, and IM and was the runner-up in the 200 free (1:39.85) and the bronze medalist in the 100 fly (49.56) at the NCHSAA 3A State Swimming and Diving Championships last February. A year earlier, as a freshman, he had finished third in the same events with times of 1:42.18 and 51.05.

Commins had a series of big meets last spring that saw him improve his lifetime bests in the 200/500/1000 free, 50 back, 200 breast, 200 fly, and 100/200/400 IM. At the North Carolina LSC Senior Short Course Championships, he won the 200 free and the 100/200 fly, was runner-up in the 500 free and 200 IM, and came in 4th in the 1000 free and 9th in the 100 free. He left the meet with PBs in the 200/1000 free, 200 fly, and 200 IM. The following month he won the 500 free and 400 IM at Tar Heel States, again with best times.

Best SCY times:

  • 200 fly – 1:48.63
  • 100 fly – 49.56
  • 200 free – 1:39.70
  • 500 free – 4:32.84
  • 1000 free – 9:30.34
  • 400 IM – 4:00.40

He will join the Auburn Tigers in the class of 2028 with Sam Empey (“Best of the Rest”), Aidan Clements, and Keaton Rice. Auburn’s mid-distance group will be turning over, as Mikkel Gadgaard, Michael Bonson, and Ryan Husband are all juniors this year and, barring a 5th year, will be graduating as Commins starts his career at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center.
