(Montreal, QC – March 22, 2021) – Water Polo Canada announced earlier today that the organization is parting ways with Head Coach Giuseppe “Pino” Porzio. The program will be moving in a different direction as the Men’s National Team enters the Paris 2024 Olympic cycle.

Water Polo Canada would like to thank Giuseppe Porzio for his dedication and work with the Canadian team over the past five years. Porzio led the Men’s National Team to two Olympic Qualification Tournament appearances, a Silver Medal at the Pan American Games, and a Bronze Medal at the FINA Intercontinental Tournament, allowing Canada to compete in the FINA World League Super Final for the first time since 2014.

“On behalf of the Men’s National Team Program, I would like to thank Coach Porzio for his time with Water Polo Canada. He was a great coach and sport professional to have within our organization during his tenure. It was truly a privilege to have work closely with him for the past five years.”- Justin Oliveira, High Performance Director.

“What we will remember from Coach Porzio will certainly be his professionalism and his reassuring presence. In many ways he has shown us the way forward in terms of what it takes to coach a national water polo team. Beyond the technical expertise, Coach Porzio is a gentleman and we have immense respect for him. We sincerely thank him for his exceptional contribution.” – Martin Goulet, Executive Director

The Men’s National Team athletes playing abroad will continue to train with their respective clubs, and the players training at the National Team Training Centre in Montreal will continue to follow the plan put in place by the High Performance Staff following the Olympic Qualification Tournament. The search for the Men’s National Team Head Coach will begin in the coming weeks.
