2023 PRO CHAMPIONSHIPS

This post features the race videos from day 1 of the 2023 U.S. Pro Championships, which are being held at the William Wollett Jr. Aquatic Center in Irvine, CA. You can find the live recap for the night 1 finals session directly above. The first night of the meet was short, featuring only the men’s and women’s 800 freestyles, as well as the men’s and women’s 800 freestyle relays. WOMEN’S 800 FREESTYLE – TIMED FINALS

  • World Record: Katie Ledecky, USA – 8:04.79 (2016)
  • American Record: Katie Ledecky – 8:04.79 (2016)
  • US Open Record: Katie Ledecky, USA – 8:06.68 (2016)

PODIUM:

  1. Paige Madden – 8:32.46
  2. Rachel Stege – 8:34.75
  3. Caroline Pennington – 8:41.10

Virginia pro Paige Madden tore to victory in the women’s 800 free, speeding to a new personal best of 8:32.46. It was a huge swim for Madden, blowing away her previous best of 8:37.37.

MEN’S 800 FREESTYLE – TIMED FINALS

  • World Record: Zhang Lin, China – 7:32.12 (2009)
  • American Record: Bobby Finke – 7:38.67 (2023)
  • US Open Record: Bobby Finke, USA – 7:40.34 (2023)

PODIUM:

  1. Matthew Galea – 7:50.25
  2. Daniel Matheson – 7:52.34
  3. Will Gallant – 7:54.75

Australian Matthew Galea ripped a new lifetime best of 7:50.25 en route to winning the men’s 800 free. He put very consistent splitting on display, going 3:54.61 on the first 400m and coming home in 3:55.64.

WOMEN’S 4×200 FREESTYLE RELAY – TIMED FINALS

PODIUM:

  1. Wisconsin Aquatics ‘A’ – 8:01.99
  2. Alto Swim Club ‘A’ – 8:05.18
  3. Ohio State University ‘ A’ – 8:09.86

The Wisconsin quartet of Abby Carlson, Phoebe Bacon, Abby Wanezek, and Beata Nelson won the women’s 800 free relay convincingly on the first night of the meet. Carlson led off in 1:59.70, marking her first time under 2:00 in her career.

MEN’S 4×200 FREESTYLE RELAY – TIMED FINALS

PODIUM:

  1. Australia ‘A’ – 7:12.75
  2. Athens Bulldog Swim Club ‘A’ – 7:13.05
  3. Wisconsin Aquatics ‘A’ – 7:23.72

Australia was back on top of the podium in the men’s 800 free relay, where Maximillian Giuliani, Thomas Hauck, William Petric, and Matthew Galea combined for a 7:12.75. Moreover, Giuliani threw down a huge lead-off leg of 1:46.26.
