Washington and Lee Closes Regular Season With Strong Showing At VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 21 Washington and Lee women’s swimming team won every race on the event schedule in posting a 201.5-60-5 win over crosstown rival VMI on Friday night.

Highlights from the meet:
-A balanced effort from W&L saw 11 swimmers tally the 12 individual race wins, while 14 different competitors had a hand in at least one win.

-Leading the way was first-year Paige McBoyle (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn), who notched wins in the 100 breast (1:09.59) and 200 breast (2:30.26). She also swam the second leg on the winning 200 medley relay (1:51.53).

-Junior Brynn Martinson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) tied McBoyle for the team high with three total wins. She joined McBoyle, as well as seniors Sally Ennis (Richmond, Va./Collegiate School) and Jillian Cantrell (Harrison, Tenn./Girls Preparatory School) on the 200 medley relay, while swimming the opening leg for the winning 200 free relay (1:40.46). Martinson also claimed victory in the 100 free (53.58).

-Cantrell and sophomore Myla Rice (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) rounded out the Generals with a hand in multiple wins. Cantrell coupled her swimming on the 200 medley relay with a win in the 100 fly (1:00.47). Rice swam after Martinson on the 200 free relay in addition to touching first in the 50 free (25.46).

LEXINGTON, Va. – The 24th-ranked Washington and Lee men’s swimming team closed out its 2022-23 regular season with a 177-85 win over VMI on Friday night.

Highlights from the meet:
-The Generals won 11-of-14 events on the night, including nine of the 12 individual races. Seven different W&L swimmers combined for the nine solo wins.

-Sophomore Matt Fritz (Reston, Va. / South Lakes) and first-year Dalton Jobe (Henrico, Va. / Collegiate School) paced the Blue and White with two individual wins each. Fritz was the victor in the 100 back (53.37) and 100 fly (51.95), while Jobe won the 200 free (1:42.80) and 200 IM (1:55.82).

-Fritz and Jobe swam the third and fourth legs of the 200 medley relay (1:34.44), respectively, following first-years Charles Byars (Oxford, Miss. / Oxford) and Harrison Cerone (Darnestown, Md. / Georgetown Preparatory School).

-Byars, as well as senior Todd Echols (Winston Salem, N.C. / RJ Reynolds) and sophomore Baxter Smelzer (Greensboro, N.C. / Page), won one individual race and a relay. Byars added a solo win in the 100 free (47.74), Echols won the 100 breast (59.49) and Smelzer touched first in the 50 free (21.79).

-Echols and Smelzer were joined on the 200 free relay (1:26.96) by juniors Malachi Eberly (Reading, Pa. / Wilson) and Will Hughes (Fairfax, Va. / James W. Robinson Secondary).

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI men’s and women’s swimming teams hosted Washington & Lee University Friday night for Senior Night from Clark King Pool. The program’s eight seniors were honored in a pre-meet ceremony.

The W&L men defeated VMI 177-85 while the General women were victorious 201.5-60.5.

*Lane took second in the 100 breast
*Malik Nelson was second in the 50 free and third in the 100 fly
*Carter Wasser led VMI in the 200 back
*Marks took third in the 500 free
*Anna Grace Adams finished fourth in the 200 IM
*Tong, Taylor, Greathouse and Wasser took third in the 200 free relay
*Nelson, Vera, Marks and Sheehan were third in the 200 free relay
