RIVERSIDE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men’s and women’s swimming teams combined for 16 event victories Saturday on the way to sweeping their double-dual meet over host California Baptist and Pomona-Pitzer at Lancer Aquatic Center.
The Rebels’ women’s win came by scores of 159-130 against CBU and 178-105 vs. Pomona-Pitzer, while the men recorded respective scores of 191-101 and 185-109 against the Lancers and Sagehens.

THE RUNDOWN – WOMEN:
*The 200 free was one of the Rebels’ strongest events on the day with a 1-2-3 sweep led by senior Julia Filippova’s first-place finish with a time of 1:51.12. Reaching the wall after Filippova, Raftopoulou placed second (1:51.38) and senior Ava Haase finished third (1:54.56).
*Another podium sweep by UNLV came in the 200 fly, which saw Bokros (2:01.16), freshman Cameron Mykkanen (2:04.25) and Ash (2:04.68) finish first, second and third, respectively.
*In their third event sweep, the Rebels were paced by Ash’s win in the 1000 free (10:13.87), as well as a second-place finish by senior Carissa Armijo (10:32.77) and senior Camila Quineche (10:35.26) in third.
*Compiling yet another 1-2-3 finish, super Afanasyeva was the top UNLV finisher in first (55.71). Following Afanasyeva were senior Kacey Kiuchi in second (57.47) and Howell in third (58.60).
*Ash added the second of her pair of victories in the 500 free with a time of 4:59.03. Meanwhile, Bokros also earned a second event win on the day with a 100 fly time of 55.64).
*Raftopoulou put forth another podium finish with a win in the 200 back, swimming a time of 2:02.34.
*Completing the wins in the sprints, Schneider logged a time of 52.04 in her 100 free triumph. She was joined among the top-3 finishers by her Scarlet and Gray teammates Filippova (53.13) in second place in the scoring and sophomore Malia Fernandez, who had the second fastest time but exhibitioned the race.
*Bartlett completed her 100 breast victory with a time of 1:03.66 for one of her two top event marks on the afternoon. She also clocked the meet’s fastest time in the 200 IM (2:07.04), which she exhibitioned in.
*Officially scoring points for UNLV in the 200 IM, senior Gabby Lizzul clocked a time of 2:08.29 to finish in first place. Lizzul was followed in line by Howell, who exhibitioned the race with the event’s third fastest time (2:08.48).
*Capping the Scarlet and Gray’s individual wins, Howell notched a first-place finish in the 200 breast came after she swam a time of 2:20.31.
*Another pair of notable top individual times for the Rebels at the meet were provided by Filippova and Lizzul in the 500 free, who each exhibitioned with the second and third fastest marks despite not being part of the official team points tally.
*UNLV swept the relay events with its ‘A’ teams, as Kate Afanasyeva, Tosia Iwanowska, Gabby Lizzul and Kristina Schneider (1:43.59) won the 200 medley relay and Raftopoulou, Schneider, junior Alexia Taylor-Arredondo and Haase (3:27.46) finished first in the 400 free relay.
*Sophomore Vika Yanovska represented the Rebels in the win column on the diving side, capturing first place on the 3-meter board with a score of 288.95.
THE RUNDOWN – MEN:
*In their two individual event wins apiece, junior Panos Bolanos won the 100 back with a time of 48.76 and 200 back with a mark of 1:49.40 while freshman Dominik Bujak respective winning times in the 200 free and 200 IM were 1:40.00 and 1:51.46.
*On the men’s distance side, Castro’s (9:27.01) victory in the 1000 free headlined a near sweep by the Rebels. Finishing behind Castro in that event, Navarro (9:32.89) came in second during his collegiate debut and sophomore Cooper Kiel (9:41.28) touched in fourth.
*Mykkanen delivered yet another UNLV first-place finish in the 500 free with a time of 4:31.47 and he was joined atop the scoring in second by Navarro (4:38.50). Clocking the second fastest 500 free mark on the day, Castro finished with an exhibition time of 4:31.71.
*In the 200 breast, Zhukau’s first-place finish came on a time of 2:01.31, freshman Adnan Beji’s win in the 100 breast followed his time of 55.27 and Navarro’s 200 fly time (1:50.78) completed the Rebel sweep in their respective events on both the men’s and women’s sides.
*Rounding out UNLV’s top-3 finishers in the 200 breast, Beji landed in second (2:01.35). Meanwhile senior Jack Binder’s exhibition time of 2:02.17 sat third among all competitors to top off another top-time sweep for the Scarlet and Gray on the afternoon.
*Sophomore McKay Mickelson (51.79) and senior Richard Szilagyi (51.82) came close to another Rebel event sweep, as they finished third and fourth, respectively, to join Bolanos inside the top-5 for the 100 back.
*The Rebel men’s ‘A’ units swept their respective relays as well, as the quartets of Bolanos, senior Sam Willstrop, sophomore George Ratiu, and senior Reece Hemmens (1:29.66) and Mykkanen, Szilagyi, junior Steven Butler and Hemmens (2:59.90) won the 200 medley and 400 free relays.

NEXT UP: UNLV will return to the comfortable confines of Jim Reitz Pool for its first pair of home meets of the season in two weeks when it takes on BYU on Friday, Nov. 5 and Utah on Saturday, Nov. 6.

RIVERSIDE – The California Baptist University swim and dive teams wrapped up a double-duty weekend on Saturday, hosting UNLV and Pomona-Pitzer at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
Both Lancer teams came away with a first and second-place finish as the men split the day, dropping their dual with UNLV 159-130 and defeating Pomona-Pitzer 186-111. The women had the same results with different scoring, falling to UNLV 191-101, but overcoming the Sagehens 161-139.
Both UNLV teams are reigning champions — the men in the Western Athletic Conference and the women in the Mountain West Conference — returning nearly their entire squads from a year ago. The Sagehens are an elite NCAA Division III program, regularly appearing in the national rankings.
SWIM
Faith Brazil had arguably the strongest showing for the Lancer women, finishing runner-up in both the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events while notching a top-five finish in the 200 individual medley. Patricia Van Law also claimed a pair of runner-up finishes. She got the 200 backstroke silver in two minutes and 5.95 seconds before doubling up her silver count in the 200 IM in a time of 2:08.85, getting out-touched by half a second.
Freshman Giulia Decataldo extended the strong start to her collegiate career, as she earned a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle (5:08.82). Nicole Cienega grabbed a top-three finish in the 100 butterfly, taking third in 58.43 seconds.
The men’s 200-medley relay began the day with a strong runner-up swim as Jacob Leahy, Robert Moseley, Josh Walters and Remi Fabiani combined to touch in a time of 1:30.14. This foursome went on to have the bulk of the squads top finishes, as well.
Leahy had a total of four second-place finishes, adding the 400 free relay, 100 back (49.87), and the 100 free (45.42) to his list. Moseley added a trio of top-four finishes to his day. He took second in the 200 back (1:54.06), third in the 200 IM (1:55.93) and fourth in the 200 fly (1:54.58).
Walters was the second leg of the runner-up 400 free relay team but had individual success by finishing second in the 100 fly in 50.38 and third in the 50 free in a time of 21.31.
The freshman Fabiani joined Leahy on both relays and managed to claim the top spot in two races on the day. His times of 20.48 and 45.05 in the 50 and 100 frees each put him on the top-10 list for those events in fifth and tied for seventh, respectively.
Fellow freshman Brendan Man had a highlight race during the 100 fly as the only swimmer to break the 50-second mark. His time of 49.73 just missed cracking the program top-10 list but is not far off as Quinn Birtles’ time of 49.24 from the 2018-19 season looks to be within reach.
DIVE
After setting a new program record in the 3-meter on Thursday, Kiree Lowe continued her dominant weekend on the springboards with another impressive showing on Saturday. Lowe netted 289.15 points in her 3-meter win and 268.90 in the 1-meter to earn a runner-up finish.
Lowe was joined in the top five in both events by freshman Paula De Moya Alvarez and junior Madison Liu, who had stellar days. De Moya Alvarez finished just three points behind Lowe in the 3-meter event with a score of 286.15 and took a solid fifth-place finish from the 1-meter event with a score of 216.65. Liu set new personal best marks with scores of 234.20 in the 1-meter, earning a third place finish, and 248.30 in the 3-meter competition where she finished in fourth.
Evan Honer flirted with a new pool record in the 1-meter event, but while his 358.15 easily won the competition, it was just two points shy of reclaiming the record from Hawaii’s Johan Sandell, who scored a 360.70 during the 2017-18 season.
The men’s squad shined as a unit during the 3-meter competition, sweeping the podium as Honer (364.20), Jacob Penman (305.35), and Tyler Stevens (302.85) owned their home pool for the day.
UP NEXT
The Lancers will travel for the first time this season as they head to the heart of California’s Central Coast to take on the Mustangs of Cal Poly. That meet is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6, at Anderson Aquatic Center in San Luis Obispo.

RIVERSIDE, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer men’s swim and dive team opened their season with a multi dual against California Baptist and UNLV. On the day, the Sagehens turned in nine top-three performances with Remy Freeman earning two individual third place finishes while the 400 yard freestyle relay team finished in second place. Overall, the Sagehens finished the day with 105 points against UNLV (178 points) and 111 points against California Baptist (186 points). Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 30 when they travel to Cal State Bakersfield.
Diving Results
Benjamin Willett led the way for Pomona-Pitzer in the 3m dive with a sixth-place finish with 271.35 points. Liam Gilbert finished in seventh place with 201.20 points. In the 1m dive, the duo switch places with Gilbert taking sixth with 207.05 points while Willett earned 192.00 points to finish in seventh.
Swimming Results
The 200 yard medley relay team of Jason Lu, Lukas Ming Menkhoff, Gordon Kenny, and Anzo DeGiulio finished in fifth place with a time of 1:34.31. Lu took fifth place in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 52.41 seconds while finishing in third place in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:55.87. Lu also led the way for the Sagehens in the 200 yard IM with a fourth place finish with a time of 1:56.99. Isaac Pan followed closely behind to take fifth place after touching the wall in 1:58.23. Degiulio took third place in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 46.53 seconds.
Larry Yu finished in third place in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 9:40.61. In the 100 yard breaststroke, Remy Freeman touched the wall in 57.18 seconds to finish in third place. In the 200 yard breaststroke, Freeman finished in third place with a time of 2:06.42 while Isaac Pan took fourth with a time of 2:07.04. The Sagehens saw another third-place finish in the 200 yard butterfly with Daniel Gao swimming a time of 1:53.94.
Paddy Baylis led the way for Pomona-Pitzer in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:39.79, good for third place. Larry Yu followed closely behind to take fourth place after touching the wall in 4:40.47.
Matteen Harandi finished in third place in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 50.69 seconds. The Sagehens 400 yard freestyle relay team of Lukas Ming Menkhoff, Larry Yu, Anzo Degiulio, and Tag Curwen finished in second place with a time of 3:06.48.
