Tyler Clary Moving to Charlotte, Joining SwimMAC Carolina

Tyler Clary announced today on his personal website that he is moving to Charlotte and joining SwimMAC Carolina Team Elite. Clary has spent the last few seasons training back at his undergrad site at the University of Michigan with Club Wolverine, and before that was with another purely-pro group at FAST in Fullerton, California.

“I am so thankful for the years that I was able to spend at the University of Michigan. Once I arrived in Ann Arbor in 2007, my life became a whirlwind with many changes,” Clary said in a statement. “I am very pleased to say that everything has been for the best. Mike Bottom and Josh White are the best thing to happen to Michigan swimming in a long time. I have had the pleasure to watch the program change from a team that consistently placed in the top ten at NCAAs to a team that last year won it’s first NCAA title since 1995, and is in the running to win again this year. Mike and Josh have done an incredible job creating an environment at Michigan that breeds success and I am thrilled to watch what I will boldly call a new age for Michigan swimming.”

David Marsh, SwimMAC Carolina Head Coach and CEO, said:

“I’m excited to have Tyler move down to Charlotte to continue to pursue his swimming goals and his NASCAR dreams. I’ve had lengthy conversations with Mike Bottom as to building a total training program which will include several outside week trips back to Ann Arbor for some of the heavy threshold training.  Tyler is committed to a full training program. Some of that training will likely include pit crew work for his dryland development…but to swim great two hundreds and four hundreds an athlete needs to put in the appropriate volume of training necessary.”
Mike Bottom, University of Michigan Head Coach, added:

“David and I have worked together on many a project, so this is not a first. We trust each other to work in Tyler’s best interest. Charlotte is not only the home of Nascar, it is the home of fast swimming, and with a combination of Michigan endurance training, a great Pitt crew lead by David, and the fast drive in Charlotte, he will be ready to take on the world.”

Clary was the 2012 Olympic gold medalist in the 200 backstroke, where he upset a swimmer who is to become his training partner: Ryan Lochte. He took a bronze at the 2013 World Championships in the same event last year.

Clary has become heavily involved in auto racing, and Charlotte is the headquarters of NASCAR, so this move is a natural fit for his dry-side interests as well.

Any reason to think that Clary will be swimming anything other than his usual 200 back, 200 fly, 400 IM, and maybe 200 IM at Nationals this summer? I seem to remember somewhere either him being quoted, or speculating about, wanting to swim the 200 free in order to swim on a relay. Any info or guesses?

Back to SwimMAC talk, it looks like Patricia Castro-Ortega (1:58-mid 200 freestyler from Spain) is swimming with them now. She’s entered for the SCS meet in Plantation this weekend with the affiliation of MAC – NC but none of their other swimmers are entered for the meet.

Braden says it’s a nose clip but what’s it doing on his cheek? It looks like a serious parasitic infection to me.

Now that the picture has gotten attention, swimswam will be sure to use it often. The picture they keep using of Yannick Agnel always makes me laugh. I doubt he likes it though.

Working on sourcing a better pic of Yannick. I agree. Within six months we’ll have a decent database of images on him.

The Aquageek lives in Charlotte. The question is not why Tyler moved, but why he waited so long?

I am sticking to my original post… Being in NASCAR country has a lot to do with this.
