The Canadian swim team logged two national records during the prelims of the men’s 4×100 medley relay Sunday morning.
The team of Blake Tierney, Oliver Dawson, Ilya Kharun and Ruslan Gasiev broke a 16-year-old Canadian record in the event with a 3:30.86, lowering the standard by .16.
The former record was a 3:31.02, set back in 2009 by Pascal Wollach, Matthieu Bois, Joe Bartoch and Brent Hayden.
Tierney led off the relay in a blazing 52.95, almost a full second faster than the backstroke split from Wollach on the 2009 record-setting relay. Tierney’s performance gave Canada an early lead of about .4 in their heat, followed by Dawson swimming 1:00.18 on the breaststroke leg. Kharun had the fastest butterfly split across the board with a 49.98, and Gasiev brought it home in 47.75.
Relay Split Comparison
| New Record – 2025 | Old Record – 2009 | |
| Back | 52.95 (Tierney) | 53.90 (Wollach) |
| Breast | 1:00.18 (Dawson) | 58.86 (Bois) |
| Fly | 49.98 (Kharun) | 51.39 (Bartoch) |
| Free | 47.75 (Gasiev) | 46.87 (Hayden) |
| Total Time | 3:30.86 | 3:31.02 |
On top of breaking the Canadian record in the relay, Tierney blasted his way to another national record with his performance in the 100 back as the leadoff. His 52.95 knocked .4 off of the former record (53.35) set by Markus Thormeyer in 2019, marking the first-ever sub-53 swim by a Canadian swimmer.
Tierney was out fast in 25.42 and came back in 27.53, dropping over half a second from his own personal best prior to this swim (53.48). While Tierney did not race the individual 100 back in Singapore, he placed 4th in the 200 back earlier this week with a 1:55.09.
Canada’s relay team placed 4th overall in prelims and will advance safely to the final of the men’s 4×100 medley.

Scott Talbot is the real deal. Nice to see one of our national centres producing results.
So much room for further drops in this relay too, with Dawson only 17 years old.
