Jake Mitchell, a 2020 U.S. Olympian and former standout swimmer for the Florida and Michigan men’s swimming and diving teams, has revealed the 2025 World University Games in Berlin, Germany, will be the last meet of his competitive career. His announcement came via his TikTok on July 11th.

Mitchell qualified for the 2021 Olympics in dramatic fashion, hitting the qualification time in a solo time trial in 3:45.86 for the 400 free at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, before finishing eighth overall in the final in 3:45.39 in Tokyo. He returned to Trials in 2024 and finished fifth in the 400 free and seventh in the 200 free. making finals in both events in Indianapolis.
Mitchell started his collegiate swimming career at Michigan, being named the 2021 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, and won conference titles in the 500 free and the 800 free relay.
He transferred to Florida for his final three years in college, becoming a seven-time All-American and three-time SEC champion in his time with the Gators. Mitchell helped set a new SEC and SEC Meet record in the 800 free relay team of 6:02.50, and has lifetime top-three all-time swims in the 200 free (1:31.55) and 500 free (4:09.85).
In the classroom, Mitchell graduated from the University of Florida in 2025 with a degree in Health Education & Behavior and was named a CSCAA Scholar All-American, a CSC First-Team Academic All-American, and a recipient of the Gator Spirit and Tyler Silver Leadership Awards.
Born and raised in Carmel, Indiana, Mitchell was an 11-time state champion in high school and is the former National Publich High School Record holder in the 500-yard freestyle. He also earned a gold medal at the 2019 World Junior Championships in the 4×200 free relay with Team USA.
At the 2025 World University Games in Berlin, Mitchell anchored the American 4×200 free relay in 1:46.79, helping the US to earn gold, setting a new WUGs record in 7:04.51. Additionally, Mitchell brought home the individual gold in the 200 free, touching in 1:46.22. That time ranks him 10th among Americans this season.
I was fortunate enough to be in the building for his time trial in 2021, and it’s still one of my favorite memories this sport has given me. Congratulations on a great career!
He is amazing..how he brought home the prelim swim to touch the wall first, and going almost 1.44 split by going 1.45.0 on the third leg against games guy at fukuoka was a swim to remember.
He was USA swimming’s Linsanity with that time trial. He saved the American men from only sending one swimmer in an event for the first time in forever with his gutsy swim. He broke countless records and helped keep US men’s mid-distance strong both home and abroad. In this house, Jake Mitchell is a hero end of story.
