Texas-Based Freestyler Sofia Camarillo Commits to Butler Bulldogs

Texas-based Sofia Camarillo has made her college decision, and she’s set to compete for the Butler Bulldogs in the NCAA starting in the fall of 2017. Camarillo currently trains in San Antonio, Texas with the Alamo Area Aquatic Association. She’ll head to Butler after graduating from Brandeis High School at the end of this school year and team up with Olivia Allen and Sadie Texer, who have also committed to Butler.

Last season, Camarillo lowered her best time in the 100 free at the 2016 UIL 6A District 27 Championships, where she clocked a 54.51. She also competed at that meet in 2015, earning medals as a part of her team’s 200 free relay and 400 free relay. Individually, she was the bronze medalist in the 100 free and finished 5th in the 50 free at that meet.

Camarillo’s Top Times:

  • 50 free- 25.18
  • 100 free- 54.51
  • 200 free- 1:57.65
  • 200 IM- 2:15.32
  • 400 IM- 4:45.07

When comparing her best times to scoring times at the 2016 Big East Championships, Camarillo is within about a second of scoring range in the 50 free, 100 free, and 200 free. Though she typically focuses on the sprint freestyle races, she could be an asset in a few other events as well. Her best time in the 400 IM is good enough to have an immediate scoring impact for the team at the conference meet.
